A snippet from my latest collection of images with the 645D. This is a desert elephant bull in the remote far northwestern region of Namibia shot durring the start of a dust storm. Dust and sand are picked up as a strong wind blew off the ocean across sand dunes and clay banks. I followed these elephants for 5 days with an expert guide who is very experienced at leading film crews and photographers in these remote areas. I will be returning for 2 weeks again in late December as I still don't have the shot I want.
Shot with Pentax 645D and FA 300mm 5.6. ISO 250, f10 1/800th sec from a Land Rover window. The 300mm f 5.6 is becoming one of my favorite lenses due it's light and compact design compared to the FA* 300mm. Anything over f8 and the lenses are very comparable. Shooting scenes like this below f8 then it is very difficult to nail focus on moving subjects and to retain enough DOF for the image and subject. When light gets low and ISO on the 645D gets high I switch to a K5 which is very easy to control DOF at faster apertures.

I don't know who is saying you can't use medium format for wildlife but I am starting to get all the kinks worked out. Pentax 645D and 300mm 5.6. Male lion cub about 8 months old. |
