Wow !... Impressive Landscape under the Milky-Way !
... Was your Q-S1 w/o IR-cut filter or the night Not 100% Dark, or both ?
Is this place lit by the Light-Pollution ?

.
Is your scope a 1000mm Pure Reflector : Tube Length = ~900 mm~
... or some kind of " Catadioptric " Scope with Lenses in the focuser = Short-Tube ?
Catadioptric Reflector with Lenses in the focuser - Google Search

/!\ the Glass Element in the Focuser could be :
- some kind of Barlow Lens, could be Removed if you lengthen the tube ?
- some kind of Corrector that allows the use of a Spherical Mirror instead of a Parabolic one...
if you remove this Corrector, image borders will be blurred !
I hope it's Not one of these :
Black list of telescopes. Bad telescopes not for beginner

Tasco Galxsee 144500 Corrector ?
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/136-pentax-q/369368-pentax-q-astrophotog...ml#post4931112
it's not said that it has that Spherical Primary Mirror, so...
you still get one chance...
.

I wasted all the summer nights installing my Astro Gear in the yard of the building...
... and once everything was Well Settled and Ready for Astro-Photo...
the Clouds were Filling the sky from ~10 PM to ~2 AM !
:hmm: angry with all these climate skeptics

Nebulosity-Map history, location SE Marseille :
https://www.meteociel.fr/observations-meteo/nebu.php
some clear skies near the Full-Moon

So I came back to my site and completed some useful infos
1"25 Astro Filters inside Pentax K2Q Adapter
= how about 1"25 Filters in the Pentax K2Q adapter

Not even 1 astro-photo to post !

220° Lens for the Pentax Q ?
4.2 mm Image Circle, more suitable for 1/3"-1/4" ?
At 2.1 mm from the center =~ about 37° Oblique Rays on the Pixels ?!
in the imx144 Specs, Sony measures Oblique Rays = 0-20°
and =~45° on the Protective Glass !?
.
Thus you'll have to Cut its IR-Filter-Box at less than 2 mm from the Sensor's Protective Glass !
... If you suppose the Sensor's Protective Glass to be 0.6 mm Thick :
http://mecastronics.free.fr/PentaxQ10AstroIR.html
( = the thickness of the IR cut Filter )
.

.
In the Kayak World, that wouldn't be too hard to get some friend lend you his Action Cam ?
One with 12 MP 1/2.3" sensor and the capability to record a Raw File...
... so you could evaluate the Aberrations ?
Especially the - Red Side - Chromatic Aberrations...
.
Can't wait to see the results...

Thanks kayakfari ! ;)
and now, how easy it is to restore the AutoFocus functional to infinity :
Pentax Q, Q-10 modified for IR-Landscape photography

.
what are your intended uses : Action-Cam like, Astrophoto, Landscape-IR ?...
or, enjoy your 12mm board mount lens on the Q ?
What is its Focal Length ?

.
As long as the lens doesn't show Chromatic Aberration, it's still good...
else, if your lens isn't Well Corrected, could be worse...
as you allow a wider Light Frequency Range through the lens

Good news when you'll have removed your Q's IR-cut, 2old4toys !
I retrieved the measurements of the Q10 IR-cut Filter
12.6 width x 13.1 height x 0.6mm Thick

Its Thickness being 0.6mm only, you just need to Reduce BF 0.2 Maximum
-> an Optical-Rule useful when you insert / remove a Glass-Filter from a BF Path !
0.2 Maximum, because of Tolerance, if your Q has 0.05 of it...
then you just need to Reduce BF 0.15mm off

In fact, it's Very Easy : from 2 to 3 hours of High Precision Hand Work :
- Remove the 6 Screws... then the Bayonet
- verify that you find the Same Measurements as mine
... if Not, Write your Own Measurements then Subtract 0.2 & 0.1mm from them !
- for this, you need a Vernier Caliper
- a friend of yours owns a Metal Lathe, you just have to remove 0.15 mm from
the Front-side of the Bayonet Front-side... then let's try it...
- else, you need a 10-11mm thickness Three Square smooth Hand File

the 6+3 holes are in the External Crown of the Bayonet Back-side = 2.3 thickness
it'll be reduced to 2.2 all around at the same time than 3 of the following Sectors :
turning clockwise,
the Internal Bayonet Backside is divided into 6 Sectors starting at " InD33 " mark
-1 from ~1:0 to 2:30 AM (hole #2 position) : 2.4 thickness Sector to reduce to 2.2
(2 from 2:30 to 4:30 AM = 2.7mm Thickness sector : left as is)
-3 from 4:30 to 6:30 AM (hole #4 position) : 2.4 thickness Sector to reduce to 2.2
(4 from 6:30 to 8:30 AM = 2.7mm Thickness sector : left as is)
-5 from 8:30 to 10:0 AM (hole #6 position) : 2.4 thickness Sector to reduce to 2.2
(6 from 10:0 to ~1:0 PM = 2.7mm Thickness sector : left as is)

Q10's Bayonet Mount backside :

Backside of the Bayonet : External Crown (6+3 holes) was 2.3 thickness
+ 3 internal thinner Sectors were 2.4 thickness : now all are 2.2mm
I didn't touch the 3 other Sectors, they still are 2.7 thickness
-> 1st Sector begins at " InD33 " mark
I hope the grazing light shows all the details :
don't reduce the 2.7mm Sectors

Thinned Q10's Bayonet Mount, -0.2 & -0.1 this side, -0.1mm Max the other side :

Once you've reached 2.2mm thickness in these 3 Sectors - initially at 2.4mm
and, at the same time all around the External Crown (6+3 holes) initially at 2.3mm
you'll have to thin the Frontside of the Bayonet of 0.05mm to get started
then carefully Clean the Bayonet and remount it with its 6 screws
don't tighten too much, the screws are screwed into plastic
put the 5-15mm Zoom-lens, is your AF working ?
Do you hear the AF-confirmation 'BIP' ?
No, you'll have to go for 2.1...
Note : the 9-15mm range works first, the 5-9mm range works w/ a thinner Mount !

My Q10 is fine at 2.15 thickness, I'll confirm this when summer temp at 35°C+...
if your Own Measurements minus 0.15 gives you 2.15... go for 2.15 !

Now, you're able to Avoid the R72 Filter, thus the Tripod + High ISO setting !

Hi all Pentax Q's AstroPhotographers ! ;)

Two Pages with a File to Download + that File have been updated.
Sony specs pages : imx078cqk.zip now contains the 2 *Digit Values to calculate the
imx078cqk Exmor CMos Sensor's Sensitivity :
Camera Sensor Comparison Tools
Pentax Q, Q10-IRcut, most Sensitive Sensor ILC
.

.
As your Title ends with the words " astrophotography beginner ", I had to be honest, and ....
to report to you, every future astrophotography beginner, that the Q, Q10 are way more complicated to get
instantly nice results than the NX-mini for all the reasons I listed above...
.
Then, I don't think that buying a NX-mini Kit is really an investment = 2 ways to buy a used one :
- NX-mini Kit w/ 9-27 ED OIS zoom lens + Ext. Flash : ~$150€ = the price of ~3 R72 Filters
- Body Only or with the 9mm ED Pancake lens : ~$100€ = the price of ~2 R72 Filters

The Kit gathers almost Everything interesting from Samsung for ~$150€...
the Ma4NxM adapter and the 17mm f/1.8 are Very Rare...

For the price of 2 / 3 R72, you'll be able to Avoid that R72 Filter, thus the Tripod + High ISO setting :
http://mecastronics.free.fr/stora/NXmini-9mm-BAREimx183.jpg
Exif : NX-mini, 9mm f/3.5 @ f/8, 1/558 sec. ISO 100
.
Else, yes the Q, Q10's sensors are ~44.4% More Sensitive : :D
Camera Sensor Comparison Tools

I copied your MP here, in the hope maybe to get more informations ?

My appartment has been flooded 4 times since 2015, so I can't remember where did I put that IRcut filter ? :hmm:
It's a very Thin ~Composite~ ( Not 100% shure ? ) Filter... the ribbon-cable is firmly glued on it...
Maybe you could try to peel-off the ribbon-cable out of the IRcut filter ??
There is No Room to operate, your Fingers are way bigger than these tiny parts...
So, I didn't even try to operate this way ??

Another way to resolve the unreachable infinite by the AF, would be to reduce the Flange distance...
If I remember correctly... there is a Thin Washer under the Q10 Baionette Mount ?
Is this the Mount-Spring ?... Or is it a Separate Washer ?
Could it be replaced by a thinner one ?

Hope you'll find a way to keep the AF working...
I understand it's The question of all the Lenses you already own.
Sorry... I was mainly interested by AstroPhotography with my 200/1000 SkyWatcher !
I own the Pentax-Q 5-15 zoom lens, so if I find some idea, I'll post it here...

Hi 2old4toys ! ;) Many Thanks for your encouraging kind words !

.
I think you'll have to make a Definitive / Irreversible Choice :
Remove its IR-cut filter... and your Q, Q10 is definitely Dedicated to Astrophoto !
Manual Focus is the usual way for AP...
Not an issue !

.
Before making a Definitive / Irreversible Choice by maiming your Q, Q10 :o
I suggest you and every Pentaxian interested in Astrophoto AND/OR in Landscape IR PhotoGraphy
Please... Read Carefully my page about the NX mini
Samsung-NX-mini-TOP-Infra-Red-ILC

+ NX-mini are easy to find at $100€ or less
+ NX-mini IR-cut removal is 100% Fully Reversible
+ NX-mini's AF is still 100% Reliable after its IR-cut removal

+ NX-mini's LENR is Fully Cancelable !
+ NX-mini's Huge Battery will last a Winter-Night long !
+ NX-mini's Wired Remote Controls are easy to find at $25€ or less
+++ I'll write 1 page : How to add a T2-Mount-Thread M-42x0.75 for $25€ on your NX-mini
... this is crucial because Sam's MA4NXM Adapters are out of stock...

- But Yes, the Q, Q10's sensors are 44.4% More Sensitive !... :D

Thanks DC ! Sorry, apologies for the delay...
All the Photos Posted on Chassimages have been lost... and I sold my Macro Bellows 4 years ago...
Took me a long time to make a Drawing, I hope everyone will find it clear ?

Here, things are Not Simple at all !
From Buldings Crashing down after some rain... to Yellow Jackets...
Crashed Buildings were Newer than where I live !

I just meant it was as simple as for the NX-mini to Remove the IR-Filter on Q, Q10 !

/!\ The photo posted by 2old4toys is somewhat misleading :
- you have to Cut the Box at 1,1 mm from its Edges to Avoid Breaking the Filter,
your Sensor'll be full of Glass Crumbs !

My Howto / DiY page " Remove Q10 IR-cut Filter " not totally finished, but at least online :
Pentax Q, Q10, most Sensitive sensors ILC
You just need a Cutter + some time...
is my Drawing Clear ?

Compare the Sensitivity of Sensors per Area, 2 methods :

Litho+Etch Precision increase Sensitivity

The only hope to go over the 30 sec. Stupid Limitation of the Q, Q10, Q7... :

Disassembling is only the very First Step...
... who knows a "C" Decompiler suitable for MIPS RISC Processors ?

You're right, it's Prime Focus : many other infos to find on my DPReview Galleries :

Yes Gcisko, all my AstroPhotos taken in prime focus.
I'm Guiding with a ToUCam Philips mounted on the SkyWatcher finderscope
SoftWare is PHD from StarkLabs

I never tried afocal, you should, just to get an idea on the results ?

Now You & Everyone else are able to Disassemble the Q10 v1.03 FW !
- just go to : Pentax-Q10-FirmWare-disassembly
- please, read the page, just to know what's where...
- download the 10 first files of the disassembly = DisasQ10v103.zip (0.57MB)
you'll get the necessary mapfile.txt and 3 other useful .txt files...
- download the 2 hacks of Acade's disassembler : DisasMips012.zip (0.05 MB)
the original disasmips0.exe from Acade couln't handle the huge FW size...
- simply folowing the indications : just redo my Dec-15-2014's disassembly !
- you want to compare your 270 resulting files with mine :
please write to the mail@ in the 'Help-Astro' page
and I'll send you the 270 files.zip (35 MB)

Thank you very much KayakFari !

[humor] :)
Did you see (page-2) the Q10 succeeded with Messier-57 in Lucky-Imaging Mode ?
- Lucky-imaging Q10 Mode was 1 or 2 sec Exposures @ ISO 6400 -
Q10 did preserve M57's whole set of RastaFari Colors :
M57's RastaFari full Color set from special Super-Pixel Mode
M57's RastaFari full Color set from standard Bilinear Interpolation
RastaFari flag : Red-Yellow-Green
[/humor] ;)

.
I did remove its IR-cut filter when I shot IC-5146
Pentax Q10 succeeded with IC-5146 = Invisible Nebula
30 sec. exposure @ ISO 1600, I couldn't see anything but Stars...
Even after 56 x 30 sec. stacked, one can hardly guess the Cocoon Nebula

This was ~4 years ago, the How-To is archived on my old PC-XP :
My previous post just above
but as it's a very important Modification for Astro-Photo,
I'll add a detailed full page on my site ASAP !

Yes, impressive 2 ways verified numbers for these Pentaxung cameras... :p

Sorry I was so loooong for the page #2... but we had a Very Very Warm Endless 3-Weeks ! :(
Early morning at 27°C... Late evening at 30°C... very hard to sleep few moments...

I tried AstroPhotos, my HEQ5's Electronics shut off...

My old PC-XP had overheat problems too : Unable to find the photos I took 3, 5, 7 years ago...

Thus, I downloaded the 2 Main Pictures I posted on forums for this ILC...

Hi 2old4toys ! ;)

A FirmWare Hack was my 1st idea years ago, so I managed a Q10 FirmWare Disassembly to begin with
Many thanks to Acade for his tool : http://acade.au7.de/disasmips/disasmips.htm
I totally succeeded in that huge work inside the Q10 FW :

Files, Functions Statistics, Call Statistics, Symbol Map :
+ 0268 HTML Files : Calls are hyperlinks
+ 2886 Total Functions
+ 3197 Call Targets
+ 1185 Map Symbols
= 130 MB of Files to work with... that I will email to every FirmWare Hacker who asks for
Just remember it's a MIPS RISC Processor inside the Pentax Q(x) !

A " C " De-Compiler would have been more useful in issuing " Friendly Readable " Smaller files...
But I never could find a " C " or " Pascal " De-Compiler tool for free ?
Who knows one that reads MIPS objects ?
???

The reason why Electronic Shutter Exposures are limited to 2 sec....
is the same that ISO 6400 Max Exposure is 2 sec.
= Noise increase !!

Electronic Shutter on a CMos sensor needs More Transistors at work for Each Pixel !
Here they are 12.4 Million Pixels on a 4.6 x 6.15 mm IC...
thus the Noise increase !

.
More simply, one could use a (PK to) T2 Adapter, as I do...
... But that Won't upgrade your Telescope up to a ~3360mm f/2.4 Newtonian ;)
to Overcome the 30 sec. limitation of the Q :
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/136-pentax-q/369368-pentax-q-astrophotog...ml#post4351053

The IR Remote won't work in Bulb mode on Pentax Q :
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/274316-pentax-h...ml#post2957675

No Way to skip Random-Dark-Frame Subtraction if Ambient Temperature reaches ~25°C
... or if you've just over-used the Live-View for framing & focusing !
unless returning to the FW Hacking solution...

0.666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 Pentax Q... + Mechanical Shutter !
Note: 0.666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 PQ to Nikon F will do the job as well
.
This would be Very Useful for Astro-Photography...
the SkyWatcher 254/1200 is a very affordable Excellent f/4.7 Newtonian...
with 0,666 Devil's Speed Booster 4 Pentax Q it would become
2.8x 1200mm = ~3360mm at f/2.4 to Overcome the 30 sec. limitation of the Q !

Even if lowering the ISO setting down to ISO 800 !
- all my Galaxies & Nebulae were shot with the Q10 at ISO 1600 at f/5 :
Photos tagged with "iso-1600": Galleries: Digital Photography Review = geo444
which is a little too much to avoid the +30sec-LENR* when Temperature is over ~24°C
+30sec-LENR = in body Dark Frame subtraction

No Need to implement a Physical Mechanical Shutter inside the 0.666 DSB4PQ...
just make believe the Pentax Q "there is a Mechanical Shutter in the 0.666 DSB4PQ",
because for Astro-Photography there is No Need of a Physical Mechanical Shutter...
but just : Start / Stop Exposure... Build Raw File... Write Raw File on the SD card !

In fact, make believe the Pentax Q "there is a Mechanical Shutter in the 0.666 DSB4PQ",
just means (x?) Electronic Contacts that respond with the Correct Voltage when required

Who has some knowledge about the Protocol between the Body and the PK-Q Adapter ?
- just for the specific part "is there a Mechanical Shutter in this Adapter" ?

what do you think about that 2old4toys, AstroDave, Mikesul, Barondla, others ?
an affordable ~3360mm at f/2.4 for our Pentax Q ?

;)

Hi 2old4toys, what we know for sure is :

- Selecting Pentax 1/2.3 + 1/1.7 sensors in DxoMark DataBase we see
the 1/1.7" sensor has a 208 DxoISO score instead of ~280 as it's 50% larger than the 1/2.3" in the Q, Q10 :
Verification of the Direct Relationship from Sensor Area to DxoISO all other things equal
( Pentax Q + Q10 DxoISO = ( 183 + 189 ) / 2 = ~186 )

Can't go deeper with DxoMark as they didn't Test the Pentax Q7 & QS-1 :
My Comment on " DxoMarketing " : http://disq.us/p/1nnzyyb

- if the 1/1.7" sensor had the Starvis-Score of the 1/2.3" sensor
it should have a : 208 * 3354 / 2454 = ~284 DxoISO !
Starvis-Score & DxoISO seem Correlated
.

.
A CMos Sensor is a Highly Programmable Device, so
the only way to know What's the Sensor inside a Camera is to
look inside the FirmWare with an Hex-Viewer by downloading an Update
here is an example with the Q10 FirmWare
Verification of the imx078cqk

Thank you very much Mikesul ! ;)

.
Thank you very much Barondla ! ;)
as I said 2 posts before :
these tiny sensors are Very Sensitive ~ DxO ISO 5680 FF-Equivalent for the 1/2.3" in the Pentax Q, Q10 !
=> see Pentax Q10 sensor ranking among the Sony Starvis Sensors below ->

.
No reason the Q won't succeed with Planets : they are Hundreds of times Brighter than Galaxies / Nebulae !
you'll have to use the Q, Q10 in Video-Mode, then Convert the AVI file to PNG pictures
then you'll have to Discard every blurred picture to keep the best
then download RegiStax* or a similar Stacker...
Good Luck Barondla...

DeepSkyStacker align different subs using the Bright Stars Relative Coordinates
RegiStax align the pictures ignoring the dimmer stars
because of Shorter Exposure

Don't worry about Noise, Planets are Bright, you'll have to Reduce Blurring instead ! ;)
- the Max Apparent Size of Mars is less than 25 Arc-Second...
watch 8.5 Arc Second on my M-106 :

Thanks Dave ! ;)

DeepSkyStacker will not be a problem, it will simply do the job as usual :
http://deepskystacker.free.fr/english/userguide.htm
IMO, the simplest Stacking Tool

my BIG problem at Marseille is the Atmosphere's Stability
with your DA* 300mm on a Pentax Q, you'll see the Stars Blinking, Ok !
with a 1000mm you'll see the Stars Dancing...

( 1000mm on a Pentax Q = the same Reach as a Celestron C14 on an APS-C ! )

Many times, I've had to Trash ~ 50% of my 30 sec. subs ~
Here, the Sun Heats the Sea all the day long for more than 300 Days per Year,
at Night, usually the North Wind brings Cold Air over the Warm Sea !

The Precision / Sharpness of your Results depends on your Atmosphere's Stability...
- else it depends on your Determination to Trash every Blurred Sub ! :(

M-106 Galaxy : ~25 Million Light-Years from Q10 - apparent core size 2.5'x 6'
Magnitude minus Air- and Dust- and Light-Pollution worse than 10 ?
M-106 Galaxy : Q10 + SkyGlow Filter + Skywatcher 200/1000 = 88 x 30 seconds @ ISO 1600
Stacking = DeepSkyStacker 3.3

I highlighted 2 Stars close to the Galaxy :
- the Yellow one named USNOA2-1350-08095435 : Magnitude 17.3
- the Blue one named USNOA2-1350-08095450 : Magnitude 17.1
the distance in between is about ~8.5 arc second

Dumbbell gets More Pixels :
Messier 27 as seen from a Canon Eos 20d = 2.4 MPixel / cm²
-vs- shot by the Pentax Q10 = 44 MPixel / cm²
Both were shot at ISO 1600 :
https://www.dpreview.com/galleries/7467909648/photos/3037792/dumbbell-gets-more-pixels

Good Luck ! ;)

The Pentax Q(x) with their tiny sensors are Not at their best for Wide Field Astro-Photography
for Wide Field, you'd better use an APS-C (or a FF) sensor !
+ you'd find more choice in (Ultra-)Wide-Angle lenses for large sensors (Samy)

But the Pentax Q(x) with their tiny sensors are at their Best for Long Reach Astro-Photography
Why ?
Simply because thousands of Deep Sky Small Objects will Never fill an APS-C sensor !
Even mounted on a very affordable SkyWatcher 1000mm Newtonian !
+ these tiny sensors are Very Sensitive ~ DxO ISO 5680 FF-Equivalent for the 1/2.3" in the Pentax Q, Q10 !

a Pentax Q10 w/ the Pentax Adapter on a Skywatcher 200/1000 Newtonian :
= 50 x 30 seconds @ ISO 1600 stacked with DSS 3.2
it's Messier 27 Nebula at 1350 L-Y :

Other (9) Long Reach Astro-Photographies taken with a Pentax Q10 :

Good Luck ! ;)
