Coffee My Day
by Hin Man, on Flickr

Shot with Sony A6000, Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 and Lens Turbo adapter

Man, I have this lens on marketplace. I love this 55mm but I also get the super-tak 50mm f/1.4 with 8 element. If I can come up with excuses and lens storage space, I want to keep this. But it is hard, it pulls my legs when I have a lens that I leave unused. The 8-element has magic but this is likely the cheapest 55mm that I actually enjoy every single time I use it.

I totally hear you. I am using my FA and DA type of lenses for Pentax. On Sony aps-c, I mostly use the cheap AF alternatives with Sigma 19, 30 and 60 all in f/2.8. The takumar beats all of my existing lenses on the manual focus throw design. They are butter-ly smooth and offer excellent precision. I just happen to have more lenses coming off from impulses in discovering the Takumar Beauty. On manual focus lenses, I recently discover and enjoy Voiglander 21mm f/1.8 and 40mm f/1.4. The MF experience is in par with the Takumar but the edge still goes to the Takumar for the fine focusing feel. Had my eyesight not going downhill, it is a pure joy to use Takumar for manual focusing.

If I manage to sort out my mess at home with double up on lens storage space through better organization, I will close out some of my sale threads. Among the few on marketplace, my most favorite is the Super-Takumar 105mm f/2.8, I think that lens is totally under-rated. It is lightly the smallest 105mm that I have used and the focusing is the best that I have ever experienced.

Super-Takumar 105mm f/2.8 next to Contax G 90mm f/2.8

As much as I love the SMC Macro Takumar 50 f/4, that extra macro lens in my collection has to go as I have purchased DF-A 100mm WR and I have changed my mind in not letting go my DA 35mm limited. The two macros pair in 35mm and 100mm works out perfectly well for me on Pentax use while I can still use them surprisingly well on Sony with a PK-A to E adapter with a step-less aperture ring

Strangely enough, none of the DA and DF-A in 35mm and 100mm limited offer the same manual focusing experience. I have to work harder with the newer lenses in manual focusing while it is more on the joyful side with Takumar.

Cheers,
Hin

I have bunch of Takumar lenses in Marketplace and this macro is a gem. I have too much gear, I can't justify keeping them while lacking space for lens storage.

I tried out more test shots on the SMC Macro Takumar 50mm f/4.0 and I do find flare on the lens but the problem is easily compensated with a lens hood

The color and bokeh in this simple macro is outstanding. I only sell this gem because I am keeping a pair of DA 35mm limited and DF-A 100mm WR macro.

Hin

Fantastic pictures, both of them.

If I can have shot a picture like yours, I will ban myself from selling any Takumar lenses. I have a different version of of your 28mm titled as Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28mm f/3.5. And I have shamefully placed them in marketplace. I just happen not to use my Takumars frequently in 28, 35, 50 macro, 55 and 105. And I have placed all of them in marketplace. The 35 is already gone. I wish I can come up with excuses and most importantly the right storage space to keep them. They do look gorgeous. I especially like the Manual Focusing experience.

I managed to use a spanner that I have and release the stuck adapter. The adapter I bought is general 3rd party non-brand available from ebay and shipped from China and like many, they don't have a brand name. The removal tool has two spikes on one side that are supposed to align with the two slotted tiny holes on the adapter but the removal tool was badly designed and longer than the two slotted holes by a millimeter. I buy another one on Amazon with brand Fotodiox and I hope the second one won't have this problem. I have discussions with another user with C/Y bodies and my experience is likely the fault of the faulty adapter.

Thanks,
Hin

DSC07958

I went too far in dressing up my takumar lenses on a red body. The M42 to C/Y adapter is now stuck on my Contax body, sometime it loosen up and sometime it get stuck. The stuck adapter reminds me of 3rd party M42 to K adapter

Now my Contax body is turned into a m42 body with a deep scratch from my attempt to remove the stuck adapter. The Takumar in the picture is the Super-Takumar 50mm f/1.4 with 8-element.

[update] A spanner helped me to release the stuck adapter from the red Contax body. I love my Takumar and I do strange things to find a non-Pentax body to dress it up. Shame on me....

All product shots were made with S-M-C Takumar 50mm f/4.0 Macro

Cheers,
Hin

A great shot and I wish I have a dog to borrow for pictures. It is a charming and funny shot. And I am with you all the Takumar are special to its owners. To me, the Takumar offer the best in size, lightweight, beautiful build quality, and the best in manual focusing, and pleasing bokeh.

I have a casual walk yesterday morning with my Takumar 50mm f/4.0 macro.

All are taken with Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f/4.0 macro and Sony nex 5n. Hope you allow me to post pictures of non-Pentax. I still own Pentax K-5 but I have used my smaller camera more often.

Hin

Thank you so much for the generous offer. The LBA thinking in me always lures me to try my luck to buy a good copy. I actually like my Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8 very much. I think the Super/SMC Takumar 55mm f/1.8 is under-rated takumar and a outstanding value.

Thanks for you inputs. Knowledge is powerful. I was confused about the yellowing. The information in the web is everywhere and some can be misleading. Some ebay seller even claim the goodness of the yellowing glass.

I will try to get an 8-element version for the 50mm f/1.4 when the right timing comes. And my 2nd choice is to get the A 50mm f/1.4 which can be cheaper and when used on the Pentax body, it is nice to have recording of the exif. I have a love bite with almost all of the Takumar lenses. Those slower lenses in the 28 f/3.5 and 35mm f/3.5 are so good that I think those are really good underrated gems to have in one's possession. Too bad the 24mm f/3.5 is priced much higher; otherwise, I would have gotten one.

Cheers,
Hin

Super-Takumar 55mm f/1.8 is my favorite

I am on the lookout for the Takumar 50mm f/1.4 either the 7-element or the 8 element version. I know that the 8-element is special. I recently got one from Japan and I had to return it right away because of loose focusing ring. My beat up 8-element copy was not as good as my 55mm f/1.8. I might have gotten one that was in bad shape. Is the 7-element version of 50mm f/1.4 worth getting? Can someone share their experience why the 8-element is so much more sought after? What makes it so special and why is the frequent yellowing on the 8-element not a concern?

Cheers,
Hin

I have been nuts with Super-SMC Takumar lens line assembly in my bedroom. I am lost in finding my takumar in a pile of shipping boxes... Go figure how many takumar boxes there is. And I am NOT proud of that. Now that I love the takumar so much, I am thinking of changing from 645N to 67 so that I can keep tab on the 67 Takumar.

Jean, I recently went out on a rampage to get Super (SMC) takumar. I started out on the 35mm f/3.5 which I dearly love and that is followed by the 55mm f/1.8 and 28mm f/3.5. I am following your footprint. And last weekend, I got the SMC Takumar f/4.0 Macro. I am looking for either the 135mm f/3.5 or the expensive one with 135mm f/2.5. I actually want more on the 105mm f/2.8 but I find the 105mm harder to find.

Hin

And when I use a Zhongyi Lens Turbo focal reducer, the SuperTak 35mm f/3.5 is offset with the focal reducer on crop factor plus 1 stop of light

FL: 35 * 0.72 * 1.5 = 37.8mm
Speed: + 1 stop = f/2.4

Something like SuperTak 38mm f/2.4 on my NEX 5N that gains back close to the Full Frame view in film

likely f/5.6 with SuperTakumar 35mm f/3.5, Lens Turbo, NEX 5N

likely f/5.6 with SuperTakumar 35mm f/3.5 , Lens Turbo, NEX 5N
