Poll: What should the next Pentax Full Frame be?

Third party lens companies are making mounts for SONY mirrorless and there are various adapters to mount Canon lens to SONY bodies. If Pentax developed a mirrorless system the likelihood of enlisting support from third party sources would probably be higher than it is now with the K mount. It is pretty much assumed many of the current K mount lineup is from Tamron. Certainly they could adapt some of their mirrorless lineup to work with a new Pentax mirrorless mount, if they were so inclined. Personally, as I noted previously, I'll keep my K1 as long as it's doing the job I need but it will be my last DSLR. I know I'm not the only one among Pentax, Canon and Nikon owners who are looking to mirrorless as the future.

I recently bought an A7III to augment my K1. I'm perfectly happy with my K1 for the foreseeable future. But after spending time with my SONY, I'm convinced the future is mirrorless. Several of my Canon and Nikon friends have recently switched to SONY. Where I live here in Hawaii, I see more and more tourists with Olympus and SONY gear hanging around their necks. Ricoh/Pentax will be catering to a diminishing demographic if they continue with a DSLR-only product lineup. That comment will make some here angry and defensive, but it's the truth. Pentax owners barely sustain the brand at this point. In my opinion, Pentax needs a FF mirrorless system to go along with the K1II. Upgrade the K1II to the SONY 42 meg sensor, improve video, buffer, FPS, etc. Just as SONY, and Canon and Nikon, offer both models.

Pentax has among the best ergonomics, menu systems, available. It shouldn't be rocket science to develop a mirrorless body that offers superior ruggedness and weather resistance. A mirrorless design should also include a new mount design to allow adaption of third party FF mirrorless lens. It's time to move past the K-mount.

Sadly, I think Pentax does not have the resources to launch a product the buying public would would respond to and grow the brand penetration. Canon and Nikon are responding to the mirrorless market that SONY, Olympus, Fuji and Panasonic have created. Had Pentax (pre-Ricoh) not launched the K-01 with its half baked industrial design they might actually have been in the mirrorless game at this point.
If Pentax makes a decision to retain the DSLR format, and surprises by being able to bring the product to market, the feature set essentially needs to be similar to that of an a7III in a DSLR body.
  • A decent 1080/4K codec set

  • Improved AF at least to the capability of midlevel Canikons

  • 24 meg sensor

  • The present K1 features the a7III doesn't have such as GPS, pixel shift, intervalometer, Astrotracer, image stacking

  • An affordable 24-105 F4 would be a nice bonus.

As a footnote, doing a doors-off aerial shoot this past weekend, both video and stills, my K1 stayed home.
