I had a lovely hike this morning. I caught these butterflies teasing each other despite there being more blooms available than they could possibly drink. I guess they all want the best flower.
I watched the fritillary on the right come in fast, and I knew it was going to spoil my shot (I was creeping up on the giant swallowtail), so I decided to try to catch them in the air. Giant swallowtails have been very few and far between here this year.
The swallowtail gave chase! I wasn't using a high enough shutter speed for this, but I like the suggestion of motion in it. I got a couple of nice shots of fritillaries later, too. |

Thanks. I should have said, they were shot at 100X magnification with the exception of the eye, which was shot at 40X.
Here's what the eye looks like at 100X. |

I've been shooting focus stacked composites of insect parts this year. Here's a small set I did of a fairly nondescript little grey moth.
Moth antenna, top above, underside below.
A look at its scales. Please pardon the artifacts.
Here's its eye.
And finally a reference photo I took after shooting the stacks. It's not pretty but it gives an idea of what you're looking at. The species is Hyppa xylinoides, or one very closely related to it. |
