I have this on repeat at work. This should be the next bond song! the highs he can reach with his vocals is mesmerizing

I'm really digging this. Again, no idea what genre this would be, but its 'glitch music' as per the artist.
its like movie sound track, mixed with a bit of rock, mixed with computerized glitches that are random and keep you guessing what will happen.
In my opinion, this is the best way a song can be progressive, without it being rock/metal. dont come across that too often. Usually, in my experience, if its a progressive band, it HAS to be rock/metal. No real exceptions out there.

I agree with you whole heartedly!
with Opeth, with one exception, their riffs dont really move me in any way. I cant groove to it, or bob my head or tap my fingers or anything to it. Not that that is a bad thing, but that to me defines as lasting. I dont really remember any of their songs after they have left me. THAT one exception being Blackwater Park (song). the rest is just 'meh'. I remember seeing them at a concert, and even the band didn't understand the crowd. They are not the heaviest band. Their riffs dont 'require/demand' a moshpit, yet the band had to stop their songs mid way a few times just to let the crowd calm down before they break something/someone. They even called the falls nuts for going crazy. And I usually try to avoid mosh pits to my best abilities, yet try as I might, i kept getting pulled into the crowd, and even got punched a few times in the jaw. not a pleasant experience. Maybe thats why i'm biased against Opeth?

as for Porcupine Tree...aside from Trains, and Wedding Nails, nothing else strikes me as interesting

here is a non-popular opinion for the metal community:
I really think that Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree is really over rated. His ego also irritates me.

i try really hard to get into it, but it just doesn't work. his fans keep sending me songs that are so 'emotional' and i listen to them as 'meh, i've heard better solos/lyrics/riffs/bridges/etc'

sure...the production quality is second to none (also shows on Opeth), but thats...about it...

I really need some new music. everytime i hit play, whatever music that is playing always seems to irritate me, and i eventually come back to metal.
if there is no progression through the song through highs and lows, it will bore me really fast, and i need my mind to be engaged at all times.
i cant comprehend when people say they want to listen to something where they can turn off their mind and just 'chill'. i understand the sentiment, but i love my mind too much to just let go of a moment where i'm not connected to it, or using it in anyway. Thus, if its not challenging my understanding, and keeping me on my tows, i will eventually get bored of it.

my GO-TO as of late have been (in no order)
Gojira
Devin Townsend (anything related to the man)
Pantera
OLD Black Label Society
Tool
Karnivool
Leprous

As of late, i'm also experimenting with experimental music. not sure what the actual term is for the music, but stuff like 'post-rock' or 'ambient music' or 'glitch music'. though not as heavy as metal, it still keeps my mind engaged and keeps me guessing as to what will happen next
