Too large focus point issue?

It appears so. That last shot definitely seems like the camera's center point decided the background green was more contrasty.

You CAN try another trick though - shift the center point around to see if it does anything. Sometimes my k-x's center point wants to focus on the rear stuff, but if I adjust my center point to get two legs of the + to cover the subject, it will focus.
