I realize that this thread is somewhat dated, but since it seems to be "the" place for M42 usage discussion, I'll add this info here...
I recently got ahold of a small pile of m42 lenses to use on my K-r. Using a genuine Pentax adapter, I mounted one of the lenses and immediately had problems. In short, I was getting mirror flop all over the place. A half-press of the shutter would trigger it. Any other button on the camera would trigger it! Suffice it to say that I was confused.
After more time than I'd care to admit, I realized that the camera was set to autofocus on the body. Switching to manual took care of the problem.
So, in addition to what Adam so kindly posted, I'll add: Make sure that your camera body is set to manual focus!
Edit: Hmmm...maybe this wasn't the problem after all. I'm still occasionally getting the same problem on manual focus. Strangely, switching to live view fixes the problem, even after switching back out of live view. This one is confusing enough that I'll post for help elsewhere. :)

Edit follow-up: It appears that my K-r was suffering from the dreaded "mirror flop". The lack of electrical contacts on the m42 lenses only exacerbated the problem. It's being fixed now.
