Definitely better sounding than electric motors  EVs can be fast, though. The Rimac Nevera does 0-400-0 kph (0-250-0 mph) in less than 30 seconds.

Very close to the Koenigsegg Regera with its V8

Their name choice would be a bit unfortunate in Norway. 'Feit' means fatty or obese.

What, are you making fun at our prime Norwegian winter bikey things?!

(But nah, it's not a cycling channel, it's in the general Norway channel.)

I got stuck reading a "discussion" on Reddit, initialised by a Dutchman who wants to cycle through our mountains. Now, mid-winter. 95% of the participants try to dissuade the eediot while the rest call dibs on his bike.

His responds with things like
"Man its just a litte too much when there are hundreds of people saying terrible things." (Terrible things like "Please, don't do it"...)
"Are you familiar with yes theory?" (Sure, it works wonders on hypothermia!)
"If it gets too cold, I ask people if I can at least warm up inside and perhaps put a tent in the garden." (Umm, people? Gardens? In the mountains?)

A helpful German posted a link to a typical winter's day in the area where this dude wants to pedal his bike. Not that any help is welcome.

Nah, no rattlesnakes, wrong side of the Atlantic. Could maybe have been a puff adder, but I don't think they are as fond of climbing as the cape cobras.

The boomslang, rinkhals, and spitting cobra prefer wetter areas.

Nice rig! It would be a tad long and wide for some of the places we went - the Toyota got enough scratches as it was - but sure, a bigger vehicle built for more weight and with more power is always better to drive. Ok, within limits

Looks like a beautiful drive! Yes, it's steep and without guardrails, but as long as the road is as wide as it is I wouldn't mind driving it. I'm not saying there wouldn't be some adrenaline pumping through my system, but I eould definitely enjoy it.

I thought having separate public toilets for men and women was the norm most places? I suspect that cobras don't care, though. But yes, the male side had a urinal (and a toilet). I would guess the female had two toilets - I didn't check.

Indeed it was! It's always a good sign when we start planning our next trip while still on the road :)

Just the right time for it, too. I wouldn't mind some Mexican sunshine

Don't forget to pack the essentials; tickets, passport, money, shorts, and sunglasses... and that's about it, isn't it  Have a wonderful trip!

Yes, I think the Toyota is a good base for, well, pretty much anything :D The Hilux is considered a very durable and reliable vehicle. But I would rather go for the 2.8 diesel than our 2GD-FTV. Both are 4 cyl turbo. There's also a 4l petrol V6 option which I think is good, with more power but less torque. The 2.4 was quite thirsty at 12l per 100km (which is 19-20 mpg), and that was with fairly careful driving. I suspect that a bigger engine might run cheaper. Then again, even though the South Africans complained about the fuel prices they were roughly half of what I'm used to.

The tyres were 265x65R17, specified as "all terrain", but definitely with a road bias. I wouldn't choose them for going properly off-road, but on (at times very rough) gravel and sand they did a good job. We reduced air pressure to about 2/3rds when not on tar, smoothing the ride considerably. The camper unit had additional air shock absorbers to take some weight off the original springs and shocks.

And yes, the ground clearance was sufficient to make entering the camper without the step cumbersome, even for me, and I'm 6'4", most of which are legs :p I would make a horrible match with just about anyone with a bench seat! Besides, I like to sit in comfort

This might show the threads better.

As for wildlife, yes, we saw the usual suspects. The elephants and rhinos are long gone from this area, though. A first for us was the bat eared fox, with pups, even.

Adventures? Being in an unfenced camp hearing the roars of the lions coming ever closer is always an adventure :D We heard them really close just before dawn, and when we got out in the morning we found their tracks right on our doorstep, so to speak.

We also spent a couple of nights at a lodge, and had old Curly and his sons dropping by to relax under the deck of one of the other cabins.

I apologise for the indecency of old Curly. No manners at all

Even visiting the bathroom can be an adventure

But really, the trip itself was an adventure. Driving over the dunes was great fun, especially the blind summits where all you see is bonnet and blue sky and you just have to trust that the track continues straight :D

Spot on!

Nah, my intention was to point only as far back the last comma. So yeah, we did not sit inside at all. Had we gone in winter time then we'd probably use that feature. Not that I want to travel to the southern hemisphere when the light is up here...

Having a stove inside was nice, though. It was mostly too windy to cook on the outside stove.

I promised some shots of our Hilux campervan. A tad top heavy, and cross winds were not our friend, but with a decent ground clearance, 4x4 low range and rear diff lock, we didn't get stuck. The 2.4l diesel, well, it did the job, but not quickly.

A pop-up roof to get a bit more headroom and through-draught. Always nice when 220v power was available as the electric kettle was quicker than the gas stove, but the fridge ran just fine on batteries over night. The windmill on top is extra :D

Stopping to deflate the tyres when going from tar to gravel.

I know it doesn't look steep, but going down that decline was enough to damage the step hanging down rear left. Having that as the lowest point of the undercarriage wasn't the best design idea... Had to use strips to keep it in place after that.

No inside images, I'm afriad. Kitchen with a gas stove, a tiny toilet, a sofa and a stow-away table (none of which we ever used), and a bed to pull out over the sofa. And a 40l fridge. And a 60l water tank with a geyser that could run both on electricity and on gas. We did use the outside shower, but "cold" water was preferrable anyway.

I think we'll opt for a roof tent the next time, like we had in Namibia some years ago. It's less bulky and less top heavy. And more comfortable to sleep in, really. And just as quick to set up.

The only image I could find of it online.

Pictures will come! After I get home, that is. Just checking in since we have signal here - back into the bush tomorrow :)

Oh, and we heard some lions close by before sunrise this morning. When we got up (just after sunrise) we found four sets of tracks right through camp and a couple of metres from our camper. Life in unfenced camps can be interesting :D

It makes life so much easier to enjoy. Been without cell coverage most of the time, too, and will again the coming week - which also makes life simpler.

Nope, not a K-3. And all has gone well so far. Our little campervan, a modified Toyota Hilux, is well thought out and does a splendid job as a home away from home. I'm glad we have a compressor with us as there's been some deflating/reinflating of the tires when go from tar to gravel to tar. The thing has 4WD, low range and a rear diff lock - should be sufficient even if it's a heavy beast.

Tonight we stay just outside the park, some 70 km away. Will get up early tomorrow so we can enter when the gates open at 7am.

Nice weather, too, with temperatures in the high 30ies C. Drops below 25 at night, though.

Right, and our camper has a fridge. Cheers!

A slightly behind schedule Merry Christmas to all!

Even so he was half a day behind us up in reindeer land. The 24th is the big day here. Christmas day is just an incredibly quiet morning when nothing happens. It's always nice to go for (late) morning walk when almost nobody's out (and if they are they are dog owners), just a couple of cars have passed in the new snow. Never is the city as quiet as in the morning of Christmas day.

800,000 fps, that's what the Sony people use to capture the perfect still life image, isn't it?

I have taken the liberty to translate a couple of lines by a Norwegian poet on the topic. The translation does by no means do the original justice :o

The deep snow
a white curse
over the forester's head

...and a warning to other poets touching on the topic

Poet,
do not write pretty verses about
falling snow!
You do not know it.

Land Cruiser, Les! These things are important, you know :D

(In truth they are not awfully different. Probably the easiest way to tell them apart is to look at the hands of the driver; if they're oil smeared -> Land Rover.)

Let's see... I'm less three wisdom teeth. And I've received one dental crown, as well as suffered a root canal treatment on the same tooth, so there's not much left of it. Everything else is mostly intact. But then I'm still some years away from being admitted to Les' gentlemen's club.

So have I! Well, sort of. Some of it seems to have migrated from my head to ears, nostrils, shoulders.... :o
