Oh yes, some quality stuff here!

Check! ;) It is a nice climb, and I would definitely recommend doing it your way and go one of the less travelled routes. I found too many people went the Marangu route - but back then I was a poor backpacker and had to take the cheapest option, shoddy guide and all :D I climbed Mt Meru some ten years later. While not as tall (about 4560m, I think) it was a very scenic climb with a breathtaking view when the sun came up over Kilimanjaro!

 I know exactly what you mean! And really, there's nothing wrong with doing safaris on wheels! You mostly get better and closer views. The walking is more about the experience, with the photo ops coming second.

I have heard good things about Honduras and Costa Rica from others, too. I wouldn't mind going there.

You would be most welcome ;) You should visit Norway and Iceland both, though. The black volcanic rock and soil of Iceland make for very different landscapes from the old and ice-carved bedrock of the Norwegian mountains and fjords.

Umm, you won't see me with skis on, though :D

Antarctica would be very cool(!) too, but I somehow doubt I will ever go. A bit too much organising, and not really too keen on contributing to the increase in traffic there. I can well see arguments for going too, though.

Amen. I will return, too, as I have done about 15 times already

Thanks for some great recommendations!

That's definitely on my list. Maybe combined with a visit to the Galapagos islands. My wife's a biologist so that would be sort of a pilgrimage for her :)

That, too. Or if not the Amazon, I have been pondering the Pantanal wetland in western Brazil.

Would be nice, but I guess hunting for the northern lights at home would be easier and cheaper both...

Good tip. I'd imagine that's quite popular and may require a bit of planning, though!

That was a strange one. It would fit well on our (depressing) list of rare species we have seen, like the Walia ibex (maybe 500 left), mountain gorilla (800) and greater bamboo lemur (500).

Definitely worth a visit, along with the Grand Canyon. On my list for a re-visit.

Oh yes. Should have included them on my initial list of recommendations. But your pictures are far better than mine :o All I had with me in the forest was a ME Super with a M50/1.7 - not the best for close-ups!

That's an amazing place. The details in the decoration of the Hall of the Abencerrajes and around the Court of the Lions are mindboggeling.

I'm not a "city person" but I guess NYC is worth a more proper visit than the two days I stayd back when I was 10 :)

An old dream from my youth. I ended up travelling around Africa for half a year instead, and she has never let me go since! But yeah, the slow travel east is very tempting.

@Aslyfox A walking safari can be anything from a multi day mobile camping safari to short game walks. Well worth looking into.

I'll join my recommendations for "conventional" safaris, too, of course. I'm in no way tired of those :)

Yellowstone is another wilderness I'd really like to visit. Seeing grizzlies would be plain awesome!

To get going I will start with three of mine. I hope I get to see and do more things that will change this list! And of course, if you ask next week (or last week) my top three might not look like this... But here goes:

1. Do a walking safari. Getting close to big game on foot is a marvellous experience. More walking safaris will always be pinned to my bucket list :)
Buffaloes in South Luangwa, Zambia
Lions in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. They are really quite hard to get close to.

Elephant, Mana Pools. Quite easy to get close to the lone, old bulls.

2. Hiking in the Paúl Valley, Santo Antão, Cape Verde. The entire valley looks like something from a film set with steep cliffs and narrow ridges. A hike on well kept paths will take you up the mountain side from sea level to around 1000m.a.s.l. just a few kilometres as the crow flies.
View from the edge down into the valley. Didn't have a proper camera at the time, I'm afraid...

I think they put it better in this blog post
Hiking through Paúl Valley - A Place Lost in Time

3. Visit the rock hewn churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia. These 11 monolithic churches were carved out of the mountain itself in the 12th and 13th century. It's hard to comprehend that these buildings consists of one single slab of rock. The churches are still in use today.
Bet Giyorgis (Church of St George) is the best known, carved down into the ground.

After seeing some of the things people have on their Travel Bucket List in thread What is you on your Travel Bucket List? - PentaxForums.com that @Erikka started I came to wonder what places people had been to that they like so much that they would recommend them to others.

So then, in your opinion and from your experience, which travel destinations or activities do you think really should be on everybody's travel bucket list?

Karma points for illustrating images, of course.
