No, I know it's smaller, and I haven't forgotten. And I don't speculate at anything. I simply claim that I find SR useful.

As to why they have chosen to leave something out, well, I have no idea. I'm sure they have their reasons. I just don't really care. I do care about the actual specs, though.

I agree. Even though my first reaction was "the GR doesn't need SR", it does make the built-in ND filter even more useful.

That's definitely not ideal, but then I don't see the GR as a camera for long sessions of intense shooting. It's more of an impromptu snap-shooter capable of producing seriously good images.

So yes, I would have liked to see better battery performance, but at least for my needs it is fairly easily remedied with an extra battery (as I have for my current GR as well).

If that means I can use my Metz 58 in p-ttl mode that would be interesting, if a tad unwieldy :D

...and if it should be exactly what I hoped for I will just change my hopes retrospectively. Whatever it takes to keep my disappointment intact, right? :D

Fair enough. It's all a matter of preference.

This is my experience, too. Before getting the GR I was sure I'd miss a proper viewfinder, but I just don't use the GR in that way.

I'd never buy a bigger camera without an optical viewfinder, but that's a different topic.

But... if we don't worry over what might be... we could lose a good opportunity to worry!

Yes, the GR is DSLR image quality in a phone-like size (but with vastly superior controls and ergonomics). I rarely leave the house without the GR.

Yes. I'm sure this camera will be pretty useless at shooting Pennant-winged Nightjars. They should remedy that before anything else!

Sorry. Couldn't resist :o

Yes, if the chip indeed is only for noise reduction I'd say you're right. Unless there's some sort of reservation of CPU cycles - which I find very unlikely.

Yes, the Pentax AF-S is really quite good. People tend to lump it in with the more pedestrian AF-C.

Not that the GR is meant to be a super action camera with high FPS and a deep buffer. At least the way I use it the current AF is already more than good enough. Snap focus works very well, too.

As I understand it (on the K-1 II, at least) the chip may indirectly help AF by offloading the CPU so it has more capacity to use on the focusing algorithm. This might be only "Internet wisdom", but I think it sounds reasonable.

I wonder if the built-in ND filter is still there. It can be very handy at times.

Couldn't find that one locally. The Litra comes with some very useful accessories, though, and while not as bright as the Lume it has a more even spread, I believe. The bluetooth control of the Lume is nice (since the on-board controls are rather primitive), and I imagine it would become more or less essential if you place out multiple cubes.

Oh, and the optical slave function of the Lume is rather underwhelming. I can't get it to trigger unless I fire a flash almost straight on. Since the sensor is on the front of the cube that limits the use quite a bit. Not that it will matter much with a flash-less GRIII ;)

I just got myself a Lume Cube. While not a flash, it's small and compact. Haven't had any time to try it properly, though. It could well be that it simply isn't powerful enough to act as a wannabe flash. But a waterproof and bluetooth controllable light ought to be useful for something :D

So true. I didn't really know what I bought when I got my GR. I thought I did, but I was wrong. It's a very different beast from both my phone and my DSLRs. You really have to use it to understand.

Sound advice. The GR has so many brilliant little details that it would be stupid to write off the new interface until we see how it is made. I'm still skeptical, but time will show.

Wow, that was quick :) My old GR is not going anywhere until I have a replacement in hand - and I'm in no hurry.

I agree on all accounts. It might be that touch screen controls can work well, but I haven't seen any yet. Camera apps on phones are a nightmare. Hard to find what you want, but easy to touch by accident.

Physical buttons are quick to use, not as easily pressed inadvertently - and they don't move around :D

By all means, if they do something really clever - like the rest of the GR - I might still be convinced.

The good:
- Smaller size, great!
- PD focus is good.
- Probably better high-ISO performance - always good
- Higher resolution, not essential, but good.
- SR is good, I guess, but haven't really missed it.

The bad:
- Fewer physical buttons
- Still no WR. Not necessarily a deal-breaker if only they manage to keep the dust off the sensor
- Would be awesome with a flip-up screen (no lumpy twisty thing)

I believe the flash is still there - not on the mockup, but it is in the specs.

I'm not sure the GRII will come down in price any time soon. Not that the III isn't going to be a great camera, but I'm probably not the only one who's not too eager to trade physical buttons for a touch screen.

Edit:

Exactly :D
