Recently I was walking around taking pictures of my daughter playing softball when I man stopped me: "Excuse me. What kind of camera is that?" I held up my K10 with a battery grip and Pentax neck strap and replied, "It's a Pentax.
Now, I admit I do not possess the patience required to have also told him its probably 15 years old and does not accept text messages.

A female C word.
I was watching my children play herd soccer recently and noticed a woman close by taking pictures. Just to annoy my wife, I criticized the woman outloud for having her lens hood still attached in reverse, forming her index finger and thumb in a letter C to focus, leaving only her thumb as partial support for lens and camera and standing with weight on one leg almost like a crane.
My wife joked, "So, she doesn't turn you on in the least?"
"Well, I did say that. She has nice hair and great hips. But..."

I borrowed my cousins 50-500 "Bigma" and walked around our area's zoo unhindered a few days ago taking photos. Yesterday, my daughter had a special event at her school so some of the time I walk around (not with Bigma, mind you) getting candid shots of the kids playing. While walking around the zoo, the larger 50-500 lens usually gets some remarks. I was carrying two cameras as well so people are always curious if I am a "pro". One woman said, "Now that's a nice camera!" "Which one?" was my reply.
It's the lens.

Recently a product pushing party hostess was in our house making small talk after the sales. She remarked on some of my photographs. "These are really good! What did you use?"
"A camera."
"I have a D60? A Nikon? I think it is made by Nikon. I need to learn how to use it better. These (images) are nice."
"Thank you. I use Pentax."
"A Pentax? Is that a camera?"
(I was not surprised. But I had questions until it was clear she would not have answers)

My son's teacher still uses a film camera. Some of you may know that many teachers often take pictures of our children throughout the year to show us glimpses of life in daycare, preschool and early education. But most take advantage of instant imaging and printing using some sort of digital camera. This teacher has not reached that point yet. At an event last night I noticed the teacher using a Pentax film compact auto point and shoot of some kind. I immediately felt sympathy for the woman and not just because of the Pentax connection. I thought about the online deal notice I received yesterday where I could have bought a new little digital Vivitar 12 mp jobber for her very cheaply. But instead, I sent a few boxes of Fuji film with my son to give to her. This stuff is gonna go stale before I use it and i think she will appreciate it.

I keep waiting for someone's story to go like:

"I was out with my K-x a few days ago when I spotted a Pentax user who might be one of the luckiest men I have seen. Not only was he brandishing the venerable Pentax K10 with a manual lens but he also had a K-7 slung on his shoulder and a gorgeous woman walking beside him."

Pentax - Because I know something you don't.

At a recent birthday party for children, one mother was sporting a brand X camera and remarked to me, "I like your cool camera." (a K-7)
"Thank you," was what I said but "You could have bought a Pentax," was what I was thinking of saying.

New Pentax marketing slogan:

Pentax - We'll be your "adventure buddy".

And I still love the shared remark where the guy asks if the Pentax user got his K-x at Kmart. God that is a dis. Funny. But a good dis.

I went to view the parade floats in Pasadena today. I approached security with my K-7 already around my neck and the fellows standing there were so impressed they wanted to see everything in my bag. Guess Pentax does get some notice. ; )

And no. I did not see any other familiar red and black neck straps or Pentax bodies.

Borrowing a bit from Volkswagon; new slogan:
Pentax - "Great" For The Price Of "Pretty Good"!

Pentax - "Hey, that's a nice camera."

Pentax - " Yes. We still make cameras."

Pentax -" No longer number one but we are not a big pile of number two either."

Pentax - "Looking for a great camera? Well, whatever. I'm just saying. We have some. You know. If you want to buy one of ours. You know where to find me."

I try to stay away from that sort of thinking. Sometimes there is no accounting for taste. I am not saying that objects as a sense of status does not exist butif something is useful and fits your style it should not matter if "everyone else" has one.
And not to create a disturbance in The Forum but I sometimes notice black people giving other complete strangers the nod or recognition. If a motorcyclist, black person, and Pentaxian sees another unfamiliar motorcyclist, black person, Pentaxian they acknowledge the brotherhood of unity and solidarity I guess.
My brother use to always honk at other VW bugs when he drove his.
Imagine a black, motorcycle riding Pentaxian.
