Fa 43 ltd does the background bokeh so so, at best neutral. What ticks the lens is the boutique metallic build with AF capability even though the lens does have hunting issue at f1.9

This lens is still a nice lens to use and it often pops the photos I do not expect them to. Micro contrast is rather good when aperture goes above 2.4 or so.

I have a few wide open shots at the beginning but forming my habbit of using this lens only at f2.4 or so.

That is what I felt towards all the fa limited. They are really something special and I am intending to keep them forever.

I heard that he is still in German SLR forum.

He had a few unpleasant exchanges of words here.

This is discussed a few times and look at Blende's post when he tried to convince everyone how good ultron 40mm f2 is.

Da 40/2.8 vs Fa 43 vs Ultron 40 f2

Not sure where he has been up to these days but this is his excellent comparison

With great selection of scenes, the lens certainly shines like any other lens. When the circumstance is not ideal for wide open shots, you would be careful with neutral/harsh bokeh and occasional erractic auto-exposure. Sigma 30mm f1.4 does hunt its autofocus in medium to low light environment as Dennis has mentioned previously. To me, it is not as bad as my other primes like fa 43 or 31 ltd.

I sold my sigma 30/1.4 because it was for my canon mount APC camera before. otherwise, this is a lens I go for because it is well built, less boutique as limiteds and I can allow myself to be less careful with lens handling.

Definitely no concern with sharpness in the center. Before I bought this lens, the reviews on line had all sorts of MTF readings which are not helpful to translate these findings into real life images. I find images quite pleasant regardless what the testing parameters are like.

Somehow I am having a feeling that you would enjoy sigma 30 f1.4 a lot better. Fa 43 mm ltd should be a lens to use when this particular focal length is exactly what you are after.

Sigma 31 f1.4 at least is brighter and reliable autofocus + central resolution. The lens is more of usable focal length for multi-purpose.

Though both lenses have dodgy bokeh against many types of backgrounds, sigma might be your best bet (most people would sell it within 2 years though because our appetite for LBA never ends.

Ben, this is so exciting to see that you are still using pentax gear! The fact is that no matter what lenses you use, the finished images are always the superb masterpieces.

It would be great to hear your comments regarding the weaknesses and strength of this lens :)

Thanks for the information. I was quite puzzled by this for a long time, being paranoid about dust and rain getting into the front element!

Regards

No, Fa 43mm ltd cannot take filters. The front element does not have a rim for the filter to be screwed onto.
