That first shot is nothing short of excellent! PS I shot for a couple of local newspaper sports pages when I was considerably younger. I know how hard it is to get one shot in a whole game that is that good.

I find the black and white treatment loses some of the depth of the scene compared to the colour treatment. Both are good, but the black and white seems flat compared to the colour.

Hi, Norm. Here is a test shot I took from our deck in 2017. The distance to the subject is about 35'; on tripod of course (Manfrotto 055B with ball head), K3, M400/5.6 wide open.
4000x6016 reduced to forum width followed by a 408px/613px crop

I use my AFA 1.7x as a TC on my M400/5.6 routinely when I need the reach. I simply set the camera to MF so that I control the focus point and avoid the inevitable hunting with an effective aperture of f/9.52. My local library has a 16x20 print of loons on the wall, taken with the combination. Quick looks tell me that the combination is at least as sharp as cropping the 400/5.6
