Good attitude Pixie! For some of us it takes a very long time to learn anything. I bought my first Pentax in 1961 and I am still learning.

The lens hood is to keep direct bright light from touching the front element of the lens. The light gets bounced around in the glass works producing flare and reducing contrast. If direct light does not touch the glass, you can probably get decent images without the hood. I use an old M 100/4 macro, and the front element is deeply recessed so that it does not need a hood. Your 50's front element is almost flush with the filter ring, so it is much more likely to have light strike it.

Yes, macro is a lot of work. After a lot of practice, you get so it's enjoyable work, and occasionally get an image that just makes your day. Keep trying.
