You might get away with the step down rings because of the reduced field of the digitals. Worst case, you will have to crop out the vignetted corners - you will still have a really macro shot.

The reversing rings work best with wide angle lenses. For example, the SMCP-M 28/3.5 with reverse adapter K gives about 2x on a 35 mm frame. My combination gave about 2.1x because I had a 49 > 52 filter adapter to fit the lens to a 52mm reverse adapter K. A little bit more extension is a wonderful thing.
This combination made a friend of mine extremely happy some years ago. She had taken a ring to a jeweler to have it resized, and he butchered it. She could feel the rough part when she put it on, and complained to no result, so she took him to small debts court.
I took a shot with the 28 reversed, and then we blew it up to 8 x 10. The problem was a file mark. It looked like he had gone at it with a 12 foot cross cut saw in the enlargement. That's 8x blow up of 2.1x image = 16.8x life size on paper. She got into court, said her piece and held up the 8x10. The jeweler gave up right there.
