I had that lens for a while, maybe 5 years ago. A bit sharper than the kit 18-55, and I liked the color better, too - it especially rendered blue nicely. Flare was a problem, though, due to the large front element and insufficient lens hood. Significant barrel distortion.
Back to the 35/2.4... it's a very sharp lens, I probably don't have a sharper. Cheap, light, flare-resistant. Covers full-frame. Rendition and bokeh are rather pedestrian. Last year I made a comparison with the DA21 Ltd, shooting a wooded area with each lens at f/8, moving my setup to approximate the same perspective. The image the DA21 produced was noticeably punchier in both color and contrast. The 35/2.4 image was, by comparison, flat, though decently saturated, and yet without the warm, muted charm that many older lenses possess. But really, for $100-ish, how can one realistically complain?
