Text message essay baffles British teacher
Monday, March 3, 2003 Posted: 10:17 AM EST (1517 GMT)

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- An English essay written by a British teenager in text messaging short-hand has reignited concern among teachers that literacy standards are under threat.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Monday that the 13-year-old's teacher could not decipher what the youngster had written.

"I could not believe what I was seeing. The page was riddled with hieroglyphics, many of which I simply could not translate," the teacher told the newspaper.

The girl's essay began: "My smmr hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2C my bro, his GF & thr 3 :- kids FTF. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc."

Which in translation from text messaging shorthand would read: "My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It's a great place."

Judith Gillespie, of the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, told the newspaper a decline in grammar and written English was partly linked to the text messaging craze.

"Pupils think orally and write phonetically," she said.

There would be much ridicule of Pentax if they were to release a rehashed 60-250 as a new "FF" lens.

Also, the 1:7 max magnification is unacceptable and would be embarassing for a "new" lens. It might also be an impediment to new future technologies Pentax may introduce.

I have, on more than one occasion, referred to the DA15 as The Precious.

I don't disagree with you. I think that eventually Pentax will have a streamlined lens catalog and a fairly basic decision tree will lead the user to the right lens.

It is, but that's in part because we're in the transition period between SMC and HD. I doubt we're going to get another production run of the SMC lenses.

And, of course, some of those lenses are APS-C only.

Maybe, but then I wonder about how many potential buyers refrain from buying into a system they see as too limited? Even if the "limitation" doesn't directly affect them, the perception that there is not a complete, modern lens ecosystem gives people pause.

It seems like you are at least a little fixated on marketshare, and we have seen in recent financial disclosures and marketshare data that marketshare ≠ profitability. If Pentax is not losing money with ~ 2% marketshare then they are doing a nice job treading water during this period of ILC camera "market adjustment".

Pentax has made it clear, for years, that they have no intention of entering the APS-C/FF MILC market. They've indicated this in product releases - "MILC Fighter KP" - and in interviews. There is, of course, always a slight chance they may surprise us, and as a K-01 fan I would love a new Pentax MILC, but to expect such a thing is not living in reality.

As far as "...little effort and imagination they were willing to put into FF development"... it's difficult to take this seriously. The K-1 was groundbreaking, laden with features and innovation for such a bargain price. The MK II may be a tepid follow-up, but that tends to happen, and "marketshare leader" Canon has certainly fallen into that trap mulitple times, as have other brands.

From your posts it sounds as though you made a mistake choosing Pentax, so really the best solution is to sell or trade-in your Pentax gear and move to another brand. It's that simple.

IDK about the Sony, but the Pentax K-S1 does not have an anti-aliasing filter. That's why it has Pentax's "AA Filter Simulator".

A few years ago there was a fiasco with DXOMark wrt their lens sharpness ratings involving a Panasonic m4/3 camera - I forget which one, IIRC it was a 16MP model. The issue was that lens sharpness ratings were surprisingly low, compared with similar m4/3 models. More than a few m4/3 users did their own comparisons and found the DXO ratings to be bunk. I don't know if DXO ever issued a mea culpa.

I like DXO's software; however their "lens softness" correction module bizarrely over-sharpens the corners of my DA 21 Ltd photos.

I wouldn't be surprised if new, premium macro lenses like the Sony FE 90/2.8 out-resolve the Pentax 100/2.8 Macro, but the difference is not going to be that great.
