Since I use mainly short lenses any combo hanging around my neck is comfortably supported by a woven nylon strap.
For my Pentax SLRs I prefer this once ubiquitous narrow black strap with PENTAX stitched in red.:
Other straps I use are Domke 1" Gripper and Tamrac N-40, both made in USA.
They're a little wider and so also suitable for a heavier camera/lens combo.:

I mainly use short fixed focal length lenses, usually 100mm or less.
The hoods for these are typically not very deep.
I usually remove or reverse them between shots, so "hood hats" aren't necessary.
The odd time I don't a center-pinch lens cap can be used easily and provides ample protection.
I don't care for neoprene straps either.
IMO there's nothing worse than a heavy camera bouncing against your chest as you walk...

I don't have any long lenses for which these seem most suited,
but I do own a couple of Op Tech camera neoprene soft pouches.
They are a good product and reasonably priced.
