My daughter prefers vinyl LPs, so I bought her three recent Richard & Linda Thompson reissues, I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, Hokey Pokey, and Pour Down Like Silver.
My original LP copies were destroyed in the flood from Superstorm Sandy but I own them on CD.

Spunky - Johnny Jenkins, 1964 You Tube |
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UxdSmUHf4JA?controls=1" allowfullscreen> |
Great instrumental single, a deep cut from the Stax/Volt archive.
Johnny Jenkins (1939-2006) was a left-handed blues guitarist from Georgia.
His playing style influenced Jimi Hendrix. Otis Redding got his start as his roadie.

Outside of a Small Circle of Friends - Phil Ochs, 1967 You Tube |

This song is a reference to the famous murder of Kitty Genovese. Many neighbors heard heard her screams but didn't intervene. Phil Ochs committed suicide at 35 in 1976 about one mile from where I now live.

One of my favorite Richard Thompson albums is Hand of Kindness from 1983.
It features the original studio version of Tear-Stained Letter with John Kirkpatrick on accordion.
The entire album is available on YouTube.

A tribute to "Blue beat", a Jamaican R&B music style popular in the early 1960's.
This record is sometimes played behind the AI deejay on WFMU's Rock 'N' Soul Radio stream.
FWIW I identified it from memory. You can keep your smartphone and Shazam, thank you...

No matter how much time passes and our musical tastes change those old songs will always be a memory jogger.
I enjoy discovering older music I was not aware of or was dismissive of in the past.
