I'm a charter member of the of the Honourable Association of Crusty Coots. In fact I'm the Sergeant at Arms of our local chapter, up here. :D

Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones and Tom Selleck I think are excellent modern day actors. Others are good too. There was a movie, Quigley I think it was, where Tom Selleck was a gun for hire, went to frontier Australia, had a long distance Sharps buffalo rifle...top notch movie.

I've often wondered why Tom Selleck wasn't a bigger star than he became...he's up there no doubt, but I've always seen him at the top of the pile...acting wise. Saw him first in Rockford Files as Lance, than Magnum PI. Heard that he was first choice to star in Indiana Jones...but due to contractual arrangements couldn't be released. As good as Harrison Ford is in the role, I think this would of been a perfect role for Selleck and may have further ignited his career.

BTW, forgot to mention another TV/ movie western actor that is great is James Garner.

He was. I believe he might of been the only actor to 'kill' John Wayne in a movie. Hard to say how this affected his career. :D

I tried to come up with a favourite for best cowboy, but I wrestled with this one ...so here's my indecisive list:

Toss up between John Wayne and Steve McQueen....for movie cowboy.

For TV cowboy, hands down, has to be Clint Eastwood in the series Rawhide.

For my favourite era (1940's, 1950's) of cowboy movies it's a toss up between 'Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea.

Best psychotic in either a cowboy role (The Man who shot Liberty Valance) or biker role ( Chino in Rebel without a cause) is Lee Marvin....with honorary mention to Bruce Dern.

In addition I have to give a tip of the cowboy hat to Jimmy Stewart and Glen Ford. These two were exceptional actors...in westerns and all other movies...and it didn't hurt that Ford was Canadian born...me being a Canuck. :D

:D I have every intention of fulfilling that serious requirement of grandfathers. He not quite 6 months and already I showed him the chase scene in the movie, Bullit! But get this...while his mother (my daughter) was in the same room ! :D As you can see I'm no shrinking violet.

Gotta go...daughter just came into the room and I don't want her to see this....

A western I like is High Noon, 1952, with Garry Cooper.

It is about an aging sheriff who is soon to be married to a young woman (Grace Kelly) who wants him to give up his badge and hang up his gun. She wants him to be a peaceable man.

He wants to do so, but then the inevitable happens...the bad guys come into town with his name on their bullets. It becomes an action filled dilemma for him, her and them.

Another western favourite of mine, is a modern one that takes place shortly after WW2. The movie is, Bad Day at Black Rock , which was made in 1955. It stars Spencer Tracy, late of the U.S. Army who is looking to give a medal to the father of an American soldier who died in WW2. The train he is on comes to a stop in a dusty village in the middle of nowhere, nowhere in this instance being in the middle of dry, hot Nevada desert.

The village is unfriendly, violent at times and it's demographics seems to have a high percentage of psycho males . Great story, excellent casting, wonderful acting and the photography is tops.

No cattle in the cast, just the occasional cowboy hat to be seen and no one that I can recall riding a horse, Jeep flat fenders have taken their place.

But trail dust aplenty, too much whiskey and as they say in C.J. Box novels things get 'western' in a hurry.:D

I would but his parents don't want any encouragement for him to ride motorcycles and they have valid safety concerns. :) He's many years (15 1/2 years :D) from getting a driver's license.

His old grandfather (me) :D rode motorcycles for many years and I still have two...one a '67 Matchless (Norton) 750cc Scrambler (G15 CS) and a '78 Yamaha SR 500, while his uncle (my son) rides a BMW GS. Somehow Grandfather and Uncle will have to figure out how to hide our motorcycles when he's around. :D

I watched Bullit on TCM tonight. It's one of those movies ..if it is on...invariably I'll tune it in, like I do with North by Northwest. While watching Bullit today I was attempting to explain to my grandson, why Steverino was the King of Cool. Not sure I've convinced him completely...yet. :D

Liberty Valance is a great movie. Lee Marvin as the sociopath Valance and Strother Martin as his weaselly sidekick who was always revving Valance up are wonderful in this movie.

I like Butch Cassidy , but I prefer Liberty Valance. The characters in Liberty Valance are well - drawn IMO.

For Westerns I generally like Randolph Scott movies, some John Wayne movies. I also like the Hopalong Cassidy movies...they were about an hour long, made in the '30's and '40's and starred Bill Boyd.

Other movies, not necessarily westerns, but just darn good movies, would include my favourite of all time North by Northwest. I also like Bullit and I'm also a real fan of the Film Noire programming , Sunday mornings on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), with presenter Eddie Muller.

Eddie is an expert on Film Noire, his movie selections are top notch and his 'behind the scenes' background on both the movies and the actors...highly entertaining. It's one of the few must see programs I watch.
