Man, that would suck if it turns out to be just the natural life span.
Grasping at staws here, but have you tried getting your giotto rocket blower out and blowng off the area behind the mirror where the af sensor is? My old K5 had intermittent AF when dust would build up back there, I don't remember it being a low light issue specifically, just intermittent focus lock. Clean the contacts? Dunno. I can feel your frustration and empathize, I'd be too. My old Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is still going strong after many more years and shots than that, surviving from back in my early digital and wedding days... hard to kill good old screw drive.

I don't have that lens... BUT... I have noticed that some UV filters gave me the dickens in low light AF until I realized and chucked them altogether.

I used to be a filter guy, had them as protection on everything and as a carry over from my film days, to help WB... but I'm at the point in my life where I am willing to trade off the gamble of dirt/damage for better quality/functionality and use a hood and try to leave the hood on with a pinch cap, so the front element is at least protected by being recessed, and I call that "good enough" now, because I find everything works & looks better without another piece of glass out front. Just a guess and I thought worth mentioning.

Thanks, that is pretty helpful. My 28-75 is actually a very good copy... the funny thing is, I find myself leaving it home if shooting outdoor/landscape for the Tokina 20-35 ATX II in the bag instead, because I like the ultra wide...

The Irix is extremely tempting, mainly for its size/weight/price/optics with it's main drawback being as you say, it's not a zoom, and I often am in environments that are not lens-changing friendly.

I've got more to think about... it gets complex when I start thinking of my bag load-out for different scenarios, because weight is always an issue, (nothing worse than lugging a bunch of heavy stuff you end up not using, or wishing you brought something else) but I think I have a better idea what I want to do now.

Thanks again for you help,
Eric

Vincent, another great shot from your morning stroll.

Forgive the minor thread drift - I've been following this thread a long time, and keep asking myself if I'd be better off getting the keeping my Tamron 28-75 and just adding the DFA15-30 to replace my Tokina 20-35mm, OR... ditching the Tamron, and the Tokina and getting DFA 24-70 by itself to reduce what I carry...

You're photo's have been a big part of that second thought. Everything I hear about the DFA15-30mm is that it is huge & heavy... and people tend to leave it at home. 24mm "could" be wide enough for most of my needs... I've heard it said that the 24-70 is sharper at 24 than it is at 70?? Hard to see evidence of that in yours, but it might not be a bad thing for portraits... and sharpness is relative, I mean, depending on how it stacks up against my current Tamron at 70mm...

If I go with the single lens, 24-70 option, I could still eventually grab an Irix 15mm for when I really want UWA , and it should still be reasonable weight kit with upgraded optics to my current kit?

Your thoughts appreciated, or a PM if you think it's too much thread drift.

Another great pixel shift. Gotta ask about the perspective... did you splay out your tripod wide for the low angle, or did you set your camera off the ground on your lunch box, so to speak??? :hmm:

Thanks for sharing,
Eric

I've been enjoying these morning lake series, but I have been also wondering... when you load the camera into the truck, do you also bring a fishing pole?

One of the things I liked most about fishing was the peaceful sunrises with a thermos of hot coffee and just enjoying the view, even when they were not biting.

zeitlos, those look great!

I know the doggie pics are in bright daylight, but it almost gives a person second thoughts about needing a FF... you are getting great results from that lens on the K30, and I can't wait to see what you and others will do with it on the K1.

Still haven't given in to the urge to pre-order one yet, but my resolve is weakening more and more... ugh!

Bummer Ken... But how did DPR get away with posting sample pics in their Preview article with their uncooked firmware version?

Maybe you didn't buy your Ricoh contact guy enough drinks?

:lol::lol::lol:
