Ummm... I am not so sure. APSC is still the weapon of choice for action and long tele work, which I think is what is delaying the release. They need to release a camera that is at least ***usable for birding, sports, long tele work, etc which is where the K-1 is a bit weak in FPS, buffer, and crop pixel density (no better than K-5IIs giving AA-less 15.xx mp crop).

To say that APSC people all moved on to the K-1 and don't still want an APSC seems like folly... I know I for one want a high density APSC for birding, etc. to carry with my K-1. The weight of adding an APSC body in my bag is lighter than carrying a 600mm F4... so I could carry my K-1 with my FA31/FA77 and the new K3.xxx with HDFA150-450 and still have a lighter total kit for less total cash outlay. If I was just doing portraits, landscapes or street, you might have something to your claim, but everyone's needs are different.

Unless of course they released a new Full Frame replacement for K-1 with a 50+mp low noise sensor... which would give a similar pixel density to APSC... heh. :hmm::confused::o but chances are, the 2 technologies will always remain unparallel, so the current gen APSC will probably always maintain the advantage for density. I dunno... maybe I am talking out my booty, but it seems historically true, so it seems logical moving forward to maintain a flagship APSC line for the many reasons it makes sense.

***EDIT: Usable, not meaning that past K-3 models were not usable, just saying usable in the vane of staying current with competitors as they are usable, IE: staying at least in the realm of FPS, CAF & buffer, not necessarily having to be on top in specifications on paper, because you pay a lot for that last 2% of performance, where as reaching 98% is still pretty darn good and lost in the noise of individual ability to use that last 2%.

I agree, it is a personal choice. If you need the DOF to pull off the mood or creative vision you have a photo, then please by all means people, stop the lens down to get the shot. That little bit of sharpness loss is only detectable if you put another picture next to it that is sharper. Hung on a wall and framed, what average person is going to think "gee, that pic could have been .06 percent sharper if they didn't try to get those trees in the background into the focal plane"?

I find my HD DFA150-450mm is very good wide open, but its sweet spot is about F7.1 or f8.0, but beyond that, I don't know where it diffracts, probably never stopped it down much beyond F10 or if ever beyond F11... because I'd just giving up sharpness with slow shutter speed or trading for ISO noise. Besides, with telephoto compression at typical birding distance, most of even a large bird will be in focus at F8 ...

With WA's and UWA's, the choice is even simpler, since the DOF scale is much more forgiving. 3ft to inf by F8 to F11 on most. The real issue for me is only on Macro's, where you want/need the DOF and have to stop down and add some serious light.

We'll have enough pixels when you need to own only 3 lenses, 1 UWA, 1 normal and one short tele, and cropping lets you do the rest without noticeable degradation. So, whatever it will take to do birding with a 85mm F1.4 on FF that will let you crop to the field of view of about 1000mm without noise or degradation for usable prints up to billboard size. Yeah, that should do it. ;) Oh wait, then there is that pesky lens quality issue... hmmm... :hmm:

Joking aside, I'm not sure what the limits are, or what applications we could use all those extra pixels for, but I DO REMEMBER myself saying at a COMDEX show in??? 1989 90 91??? I don't remember for sure, seeing the first joint venture (Kodak/Nikon?) DSLR that barely did VGA 1mp and thinking, "This image quality is a joke, it is slow, bulky, and will never replace film in my lifetime". I keep this memory alive to keep me humble, so that I don't poo poo new tech and remember that with enough time and persistence, (and money) a lot of obstacles can be overcome.

Don't forget the Nikon D300 Aug 200712.3 mp to... 2008 NOTHING...2009 NOTHING...2010 NOTHING...2011 NOTHING...2012 NOTHING...2013 NOTHING...2014...NOTHING...2015...NOTHING... Nikon 2016 FINALLY! D500 20.9mp Saga! Talk about abuse, now THAT is a long wait for an APSC flagship successor!

Meanwhile, 2010 D7000 16MP, D7100 2013 24MP, 2015 D7200 24MP, 2017 D7500 20.9MP

It would almost lead you to believe that the megapixel race was over... or at least that there was a momentary grasp for sanity.
