I think that any time a store removes items from the original packaging (ie the battery) to sell seperately, it is wrong and they should be called on it. You are purchasing a product advertised by the manufacturer and have the right to expect that it will come in the manufacturer's box with all of the items that the manufacturer has included. Afterall, Pentax's website tells you exactly what is in the box. When a store alters the packaging they are altering the total product, which is not what you asked for.
Would any of us buy a new car if we found out the the dealer had removed the steering wheel and expected us to pay extra for it? I wouldn't.

I still like buying camera bodies at my local shop. They have been in business for around 50 years and I actually worked for them for 4 years. Good people, good service. In the end I think it does not cost any extra money, since I never have any problems that can't be fixed in a heart beat.
