Yay...just got my dock from B&H and updated the firmware! Thanks for the explanation rayallen.

Now, to figure out how to use the focus calibration function. I hope there's a video or two around about that!

Maybe you have steady hands, b/c I'm not sure I see a difference.

However, it wasn't blurred, which is the key thing.

I'm going to order the dock tonight.

What steps do you have to take to do the firmware update once you have the dock?

Thanks

Thank you.

BTW, I forwarded this to Florent of Sigma-rumors.com, and he has posted the issue.

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Contemporary: Issue with Pentax's Sensor Stabilization?

---------- Post added 01-14-15 at 12:09 PM ----------

Just want to be sure that I understand correctly in that you are not experiencing poorer performance with SR on than off at the wide end for slow shutter speeds. Is that correct?

The rest of us seem to have found that under those conditions image blur occurs with SR on but we are not experiencing it with SR off.

Well it appears to be feeding an incorrect parameter, whichever it is. Hopefully Sigma will look into this and will be able to quickly isolate the issue. I'm assuming that an update to the firmware can correct it as the optics are not the problem or we would experience the issue whether SR is on or off

Is this based on reviewing the SR Focal Length in the metadata? Or, is this based on eyeballing the image?

The interface for the US site is a web form. Perhaps there is a Web form that you can use.

You could also probably use the web form that I used.

Has anybody else received any responses from Sigma? Based on mine, it seems like I am the only one they have ever heard this from. That's not encouraging if we're hoping for a fix.

Then please contact Sigma with this info. Based on their response to me it seems like they are unaware of this. They will be more inclined to fix the problem if more people bring it to their attention. Thanks

Great. We need as many people as possible to contact Sigma.

As far as a dock is concerned, it may have use for future lens/camera purchases, but first and foremost I'd like a solution, even if that's what it takes.

I'm wondering if Adam can promote this as it would be good for as many Pentax users to see this as possible.

Here is the reply I got from Sigma:

"Hello Steven,
We are presently not experiencing this situation but I will forward this to our engineers in Japan for investigation.
Yours Truly,
Paul Pizzano
The Sigma Corp. of America"

Looks like we need more and more people to contact Sigma about this! Please contact Sigma.

I used your text as the basis for my submission to Sigma, which was just sent a few miniutes ago. I suggest that everyone concerned about it contact Sigma with the same message.

Message sent to Sigma:
Sigma 17-70 "Contemporary" for Pentax: compatibility problems with "Shake Reduction" function

Apparently the 17-70 "Contempary" lens suffers from some compatibility issues with the "Shake Reduction" (SR) function of Pentax cameras. A new report has been just written in the largest English-language forum for Pentax cameras (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/285104-sigm...reduction.html)

As can be seen from the metadata of image files, the problem arises due to incorrect values for the parameter "SR focal length" at wide angle. This leads to a malfunction of the SR function in the cameras as it assumes a wrong focal length (e.g. 66mm instead of 17mm), which may result in blurred images. As a matter of fact, I was able to achieve sharp images at 17mm at 1/15" handheld with SR off, but not able to do so once the SR was turned on due to the overcompensation resulting from the incorrect 'SR focal length' values being passed. As you can imagine, this is extremely distressing to anyone who owns this lens or is considering this lens as this is a fine piece of glass that appears to have been compromised by systemic error.

As can be seen in the forum thread, the problem has been confirmed by other users of the lens with various current and older camera models (K-3, K-5II, K-5IIs, K-5).

I would appreciate it if you could investigate this problem or pass it on to the appropriate place. I'd be happy to update the review accordingly as soon as I get more information from you. Of course the question whether this problem can be expected to be fixed by a firmware update will be of particular interest to users of the lens as well as potential future customers of Sigma products.

Best Regards

Steven Brener

Not for those of us who bought it from a PF member! :) Anyway, probably not a bad idea to invest in the dock, assuming it will have additional use in the future.

BTW, post the message you send to Sigma. Maybe we can send the same message to local Sigma centers in our respective countries. Thanks!

Here are my results, and they were typical with multiple tries. I focused on the cup using AF.S:

17mm 1/15" no SR

17mm 1/15" SR on

Assuming there is a firmware upgrade, I assume that we would have to buy the dock to apply it.

Just gave regex a try, and it doesn't seem to be burried in there.

I mentioned above that I did a few snaps at 17mm at about 1/15". The ones without SR were sharper....actually, very sharp.

I must be dense (no need to agree). I don't see a Manufacturer Notes section in Photome. I see a Manufacturer notes row in the Camera section, but it does not have this data in that row.

---------- Post added 01-07-15 at 01:52 PM ----------

BTW, I just took a number of shots of a mug at 17mm @ ISO 400 with SR on and off. The shutter speed was around 1/15". All the ones with SR on came out a little blurry. But when I turned it off, most of them were very sharp.

Rupert - I think he was saying that the problem showed up most significantly between 17-21mm and was gone at about 31mm. Also, I think that he was talking about shutter speeds in the range of 1/15" or less.

Also, I wonder if this is a problem restricted to the Contemporary version of this specific lens, or is it a Sigma-wide problem.

I just took 3 jpgs @ ISO 200 at 17mm. 19mm and 21mm. The SR was on and the shutter speed was about 1/15" for each. I downloaded Photome, but I am not seeing where the SR Focal Length is displayed in the interface.
