My advice is to quickly graduate from "auto" (i.e., green mode on the K5). I recommend P-mode. It will give you much more control while still taking care of nearly everything for you. Just use the back or front wheel to effectively set Aperture of Shutter priority.

The K5 is a lovely camera. You will enjoy it.
