Questions about a gallery noticing my photo website

I've not heard of a gallery charging a fee for representation. It's not something I would do. If I'm employing a salesman I don't pay a salary, I pay a commission. I'd want my gallery to have some incentive to sell my work.

To my mind it's like an author paying a publishing company to publish his book.

But what do I know--I'm not a NYC artist.
