Are we really THAT rare?

I only wish I could use my vintage Nikon rangefinder lenses on my Pentax body. Still, I love my “old” K-3, my 4 Limited lenses (15,20,35,70) and 2 zooms (FA 20-35 as nd DA18-135). I’m yearning for a monochrome. I’ve owned Spotmatic, KM, MX,LX. Over 50 years of Pentax

I’m in Austin too. K3 w/ a FA30-35, DA18-135, 4 Limiteds, 15,20,35,70.
I also use vintage Nikon rangefinder S3 and SP. I guess I’m unusual.

Is a new film camera still on the horizon? Nikon revived interest in their S3 and SP in early 2000s but failed to continue. My first SLR was a K- mount Mamiyaflex in 1969.. a K-mount. Next was a Spotmatic. A modern film body would be a great encore to the K-3 iii Monochrome.

Perhaps one of my most used lenses on my K3 is a FA 20-35. Great walk-around lens.

Reminds me of a pro photographer who went on an African safari and took nothing larger than a 105 mm lens and 100asa film and got far better photographs than all those wielding 300’s and longer with “fast” film.

Give us the right tool for the job and an operator trained to use it. I wouldn’t bring out my 8x10 night time candids on the streets, though I do know of someone who has done it… hand held at that.

Lately I have been shooting film with my 1959 Nikon S3 rangefinder, but just bought a Pentax 70 Limited for my 10 year old K3. 24 mp is plenty and I use it regularly. I still think the Pentax cameras I have owned were hard to beat: Spotmatic, KX, LX. I loved them as much as my Leicas. I’ve also owned and used 6x6, 4x5, 8x10 and have had a home darkroom. There is no such thing as an obsolete camera. Cell phones are just the modern box camera. I don’t remember the last time I saw another Pentax camera in the wild. Ricoh reps visit camera retailers only very very rarely. Very few dealers left.

I still can't forget standing in line with my K-3 waiting for a race to begin when I noticed that the Canikon user next to me had an Super-Takumar 50 1.4 mounted on the body. That focusing ring is unmistakable. I commented and found out is was the 8 element version. A good lens is always a good lens.

Was at an event this week and a guy steps up beside me with a late model Canon, but I had to look twice. The lens mounted on it was a Pentax Takamar 50 1.4 ...the focus ring is very distinctive.

There does seem to be a few places in the world where Pentax dominates the market. I know the sales staff at Precision think very highly of the camera and as I said previously, they sell well here in Texas. I feel proud to be seen using my K-3. I admit that I have always had an attraction to cameras that are not the most common. I have been a Leica film camera user for near 40 years now, but their digital cameras have never been as good as the Pentax (and other mainstream brands) at almost 10 times the price. Their lenses are another story.
My K-3 replaced my K-20 which I enjoyed very much. So far, I would say the K-3 is a "break through" camera for me. I have nothing but praise for it. I'll add that I rarely shoot video.

I was told at the biggest camera store in Texas, that Nikon, Canon etc has a big advertising budget which drives the store's local and on-line advertising very much. I saw 2 and 3 full page ads in the local newspaper every day before Christmas, mostly for Nikon or Canon. Only saw an ad for Pentax 2 or 3 times placed with ads for other brands. The dealers just don't get the same advertising support from Ricoh. At least there is a sales rep now to help keep the dealers up to date on new products etc.

I see another Pentax user perhaps twice a year. I do know that here in Austin, TX, Precision Camera sold all their stock of K-3's with the free battery grip this Christmas season and the Ricoh table was fairly busy during the last "expo" they had. Personally, I am enjoying my new K-3 very much...significant upgrade from the K20 I had for years. Pentax was gone from Precision for some time. Last year the owner said that they did not even have a rep. Ricoh has done a great job reviving the Pentax brand.

How about a K-3? I am loving mine.

I was in our local full service camera store recently and overheard the discussion between a customer and the salesman who is the biggest techno wonk in the store: The customer was looking to ugrade to a newer Canon body so he could get more megapixels especially while shooting in raw. He then admitted he didn't use 90% of the functions of the camera. I think he bought a new D90 for big bucks. Me, I looked in the used case and ended up buying a mint condition Pentax-M 50 f/4 macro for $99. I wonder who got the better deal.
Mention Pentax to the wonk salesman and he rolls his eyes and talks about how he doesn't like the software. Of course, he has none to sell and makes no money off Pentax.

For many years now Olympus has been in the scientific optics business. They have a reputation up there with Leitz and Zeiss for macro and microscopic photography. Many companies have had to find their niche to survive. Pentax is no exception in how they have developed their DSLR line. When time came to buy a DSLR price was the deciding factor for me as well. I love my used K20. I had a Pentax MX body with lenses: FA 20-35, a Pentax-A 35-105 f3.5, 50 f1.4, 28 f2.8. Since I have added a DA 16-45 and a Tamron 24-135. Now I'm set for both film and digital and have no interest in Canon or Nikon (I have owned Canon (F-1, EOS) in the past but never really cared much for Nikon).
Still don't see many Pentax camera out there, which I actually like. Don't see many Leica cameras either, which I have owned and shot for over 40 years.
