Visible noise is a factor of signal to noise ratio. At a given iso setting, one shot may be terrible, another may be great. It was the same with the K5.
A stop of aperture is not equal to a stop in shutter speed is not equal to a stop in iso when it comes to noise. Slower shutter speeds seem to result in less noise. I have decent shots at iso 6400 and terrible ones at iso 800.
I find that choosing a combination of widest aperture and longest shutter as possible gives me a workable shot no matter the iso, within limits. Get as much light as possible for as long as possible onto the sensor. Oddly in bright conditions closing the aperture and short shutter, driving up the iso gives a noisy photo, where lower light conditions with an open aperture and long shutter at the same iso gives a good photo. Why I have no idea; I suspect the signal to noise ratio is not a constant but a curve, and it is a matter of finding the sweet spot on the curve for the conditions.
