K-5 settings for basketball

I am sure that the DA*85 is excellent. That 135 is on my wish list for a LTD lens. I do a lot of CIS basketball (Canadian University) and there is always easy access and shoot a lot from midcourt about 5 or 6 rows up or on the baselines. High school games are usually just as easy. I have watched a lot of newbies (mostly parents) get frustrated when using 70-200 zooms since there is a tendency to go too long which makes camera shake and focusing more difficult. Frequently with a zoom, they also frame the picture too tight which can present a problem when printing an aspect ratio other than 3:2. A decent prime lens will allow flexibility in cropping and excellent IQ.

Positioning is very important, especialy if you want to get great facial expressions. Some of the best shots are playing defence. A midcourt placing up 5 or 6 rows gives great photo ops. It also is fantastic for tipoffs (I use my DA40 LTD for those). A 40 or 50 mm is the best for baseline shots in my experience. Of course, in larger arenas or gymnasiums, longer lenses may be required (I do a lot of hockey as well). They tend to have better lighting which makes a faster shutter speed possible.

I shoot a lot of basketball. I would advise you to shoot in manual mode and use the green button to get close. Take a few tesat shots before the game to get the white balance right and the proper exposure. In most cases a speed of 1/320 is enough. I would also be careful not to zoom too much, reduces camera shake and improves IQ. Centre point autofocus is mandatory and use continuous shooting mode.

I actually prefer to shoot with my DA 70 F.24 LTD (usually at F2.8-4) or mu F501.7 at F2-4. I get better results due to superior optics and faster autofocus. I try to stay at ISO 3200 with my K-5, but 6400 is OK in dimly lit gyms. The 50mm lens is great on baseline shots and the 70 is great at midcourt or almost anywhere else. Cropping usually gives better results than pushing the zoom in my experience in small gymnasiums.

Have fun.
