Just looking for a portrait lens I can learn on at the moment and thought the 55 would be a better choice. And with the M42 adapter it'll open up a lot of other cheaper lenses for me.

I actually just bought a 55/1.8 takumar and I'm about to order the m42 adapter tonight. I looked at the deviant art gallery but haven't read the article yet. The gallery was great!

Alright thanks, Kaiserz. I'm 6'2" my self. Just learning proper photography is a learning process, and then each particular subject matter has it's own particular nuances to it! I'm hoping to focus a bit on portraiture for a while and am hoping to pick up on them as I go. I'll be sure to read that article you linked tomorrow and also take a look at some professional portrait work and get an idea of what makes a good portrait.

How could I do that using Lightroom, Demp? The only lenses I have at the moment are the 18-55 and 55-300 kit lenses. The 18-55 could be a good portrait lens I'm assuming if I'm able to get close enough to use it wide open. I wasn't thinking about proper DOF at the time though. (Like I said, first time doing any kind of portrait work)

Thanks Bruce. I've never done any portrait work before so I have no clue what sort of things should be focused on.

Great thanks everyone! It was an impromptu photoshoot with my girlfriend when we went to the arboretum a few days ago. She definitely wasn't dressed for a photoshoot (Hence the A&M sweatshirt and then gold jewelry!). Yes, the chair she was in was a mini-chair. We were in a kid area of the arboretum taking pictures so all the furniture was miniature. Made both of us feel like giants for a day! I'll be sure to keep the angles in mind and try to get more sky in the shot rather than be looking down at her.
Kaiserz - I already have the 50/1.4 in my wishlist, which is only a little bit more. Just haven't been able to get one at the moment since I just got my dSLR for Christmas. I've been worrying more about just learning the camera and figuring out what it can do! Although, I'm sure once LBA kicks in I may end up with both a 1.4 and 1.7 50mm.
