By lens convert, do you mean SMC to screw drive? Do you take Canon / Nikon etc lenses and make them into K-bayonet or m42 screw or something?

The firmware page where I got my initial data is pretty good for data. They don't list the most recent firmware for the k20 as working though. I should probably contact them too.

Sounds pretty neat. Let me know if you want files and stuffs. Most was from the web, but I could get you other things, maybe video or images once I get my K-1 :D

UncleVanya,
I placed the file "MODSET.442" on the root of the SDCard. The text I had three different texts in that file for the process:
1 "[DEBUG_MODE EN]" - Enable debug mode (You need the brackets, needed bat. door open, with closed, only added three debug options to the bottom of the menu for the cameras normal "Set-Up" menu area.)

2 "[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]" - boots the camera into the debug menu (Like others, I had an instance where I had a debug-lite menu with only three options. The debug menu you want (for the K20d at least) is a black screen with text, you boot directly into it, and has approx
three pages of options.
2A: used instructions found on the internet and this form to download the file to SD card, (old habit, i had it download the file to SD twice, also make sure you download the Lens ROM. The camera ROM is also listed, so look for Lens. Also, the text in the menu for me was not identical to what was posted online, but it was close.)
[I turned off the camera before removing the SDCard. I did not test leaving it on, and didn't think it was a good idea. With no SDCard present, the camera didn't boot, adding the SD back had it booting back to the debug menu.]

I backed up the original file(and added a .original extension to it) on my computer. Modified the file on my computer (for me this was VIM on linux, but any OS and editor should work as long as the editor does not add its own extension, usually .txt)
Uploaded the file to the camera from the SD card using the debug menu. It takes much longer to write than it did to read. The read was very fast.

3 "[DEBUG_MODE DIS]" - Disable debug mode (all done, this did not work the first time and freaked me out. I repeated the process of holding the menu button down, with the SDCard door open and turning the camera on, and the second time it worked. It may have been my camera, or firmware (v.1.04) but to get into and out of debug mode, I believe I had to repeat the Bat.Door, Menu, pwr. twice.)

I think that about covers it. I still had images in my DCIM folder when I flashed mine, but if you think about it, removing everything but the flash files isn't a bad idea. Also make sure your battery is not low. I started a lens communication test while in the debug menu, and after about 3 min., I got bored and turned the camera off and back on because I was tired of waiting. It did not seem to harm anything.
There are a lot of settings in the debug menu that you don't want to touch, be careful, but its not too difficult. Double check your changes (when editing the file) and double check when you upload and download that it is the LENS firmware and you should be good to go.

*Note: from the second link, there are two columns of locations to change. The first appears to be what you use when modifying the file from a computer (this is what I did, and used the first table, (starting with 0020, 0060, etc.).) The second appears to be what you could use if you modified the file from the camera. This is a neat idea, but I have not tried it and preferred the computer method.

The links I used were:

That about covers it.
Are you thinking of modding a lens?

Reporting in with my success to remove SMC support from my DA* 16-50.
I used Linux to modify my files, modified them on the SD card uploaded them. Any editor you use will work, even notepad on windows if you have turned on the option to show file extensions. (otherwise the system hides extensions, and will auto-apply .txt to a text document.)
For me, I had to keep the SD card door open, and on some occasions, I had to repeat the process twice (hold menu and turn on) before I got debug mode.
It was consistent aside from that, and now my lens is back to rocking!
Cheers!

Edit: Added camera model used ( I used the K20d )
