Hmm... I don't see the need for f1.8 or f1.4 for your intended usage. It is useful for a brighter viewfinder image maybe but I think the dof would be too narrow, especially as your kid grows and becomes more mobile.

So, if your budget is enough, get the 20-40 AND the 70 - but I think you would be much better off with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8.
