My brothers' cockatiels do that a lot when stretching after a rest. The fluff up, stretch out their wings and moves them like an airplane during a test session and finally starts flapping them on the ground like crazy.

I still want to see some in the wild! When I was little I had a book about a puffin that I read over and over and over.
Such detail and wonderful tone!

Cute shot!
A couple of shots from a small boat with the Da* 300/4. It was hard to shoot as it was windy, rainy and I was alone in the boat without any anchor.
Sandpipers were all around the place and flew and ran around the boat. A big step for a small bird by A.Sundell, on Flickr
And an osprey flew around over me and looked quite annoyed with my presence before it flew away. Wingspan osprey by A.Sundell, on Flickr Osprey looking down by A.Sundell, on Flickr

No telescope here, but she can buy me one if she insists that I need one! I wouldn't say no.
And this was with Saturn pretty low in the sky and far from perfect weather.

Wonderful shots! I also really like the last one, it's a very "alive" shot if you know what I mean.

I've been trying thumb focus lately and it has made all the difference in keeper rate. Now it's mainly finding and getting close enough to the bird that's the problem. :p
I just managed to get decently close to a crane today in a forest bog, but I messed up and missed the best opportunity.

A couple of non-gull shots. I just wish I would have used a wider aperture on the shot with the ducks over the forest. The forest is a bit too much out of focus to me. Ducks in flight by A.Sundell, on Flickr Ducks in flight by A.Sundell, on Flickr Ducks in flight by A.Sundell, on Flickr
Same here in Sweden, at least for me. As soon as they spot me they are off and gone, no matter if I'm in a boat or on land.

Actually, I waited almost two hours for one(!) attempt of a gull coming close. I have loads of shots of other birds though but not edited and/or uploaded.

I find it truly remarkable that you guys find the birds and manage to get close to them. I have trouble to even find the birds and when I do I usually scare them away before getting close enough to get a decent pic of them. I need to take a course or something...
I actually got some decent BIF shots with the DA* 300/4 some hours ago when biking out to a lake and I usually suck at it big time. I've only uploaded common seagull ones so far but bare with me. :) Seagull 1 by A.Sundell, on Flickr Seagull 2 by A.Sundell, on Flickr Seagull 3 by A.Sundell, on Flickr Seagull 4 by A.Sundell, on Flickr

That's a once in a lifetime sequence there! Impressive that you managed to capture it no matter the technical quality.
So many great owl shots in this thread now. Wonderful tone in your!

I almost can't believe that this is shot in the wild, it's just perfect. Here we only have one wild cat and it's the Lynx and very few ever gets to see one.
What kind of blackbird is that? It looks really cool.
I've seen many owl's but only my brother has managed to take good pics of one. Wonderful shot you got! The toughest thing about owls is to see them, I bet that I walk just past them most of the time.

Hock, you have taken the best pics with the 560mm that I've seen so far, nice work!
I too am fully confident in the in-body SR and agree that more often than not when using tele lenses you use too high shutterspeed for SR to even make a big difference. I have shot with my Sigma 150-500 at 500mm at 1/60-1/100 with in-body SR engaged successfully.

I'm impressed by your shooting technique, I could only aim almost straight upwards in stints to get the shots without shaking all over the place. :p

Two shots with the DA* 300mm F4, both slightly cropped. The tits were chasing out, probably newly hatched, moths from the tree and flew out to catch them. Searching for food by A.Sundell, on Flickr Flying tit by A.Sundell, on Flickr
That's a couple of beautiful shots you got there. I like the variety of looks they have to them.
You must still be very close to the bird, really impressive one!
