Another nice one, Dave. I hate shooting blind. No tilt screen was one of the negatives against the Pentaxes when I was buying. There were more positives so I went with Pentax but I do wish I had a tilt screen....

It isn't benign. Coot engage in brood parasitism. A hen will lay eggs in another nest. If the host can recognize that the chick isn't hers (and coots have developed ways to recognize parasite chicks) they will drive the the chick away or even drown the chick.That's what is going on in the image. Coots also favor chick ornamentation. The parents favor the chicks with the brightest and biggest tufts. Less brightly colored chicks will be neglected in favor of the more ornamented chicks. What's odd is that the bright ornamentation actually makes the chicks more susceptible to predators but the parents still favor the most brightly colored offspring. and no, theses colors weren't enhanced in any way. The chicks are naturally those colors. The colors do fade after about a week.
