Yep! A P-51 'Mustang'. This was a "Heritage Flight", an event that pairs a modern military airplane with an older warbird for a flyby at air shows. IMGP9754 copy by Miles Shaylor, on Flickr

Thanks! The brown one is a Fairchild Republic A-10. It's armed with a GE GAU-8 'Avenger' gun. The GAU-8 is a 30mm 7 barrel Gatling gun that spits out 3900 rounds per minute. The Warthog always wins because you do NOT want this machine behind you! IMG_0441 by Miles Shaylor, on Flickr

It's sad to see the sun set on such a unique event. B0162581 by Miles Shaylor, on Flickr
There are rumors that the air races will continue at some other as yet unnamed site. But the insurance isn't the only problem. It needs a place that can support (lodging, food, etc) thousands of spectators and aviation crews. This city will also need a remote airport that can be closed for about a week every year. Stead airport where the races used to be was an abandoned WWII Army airfield about 15 miles from Reno. Over the years Reno has grown out to the area around the airfield and the likelihood that an airplane will crash into a housing development or one of the countless industrial sites has become too great. Here's a few more of the Screamin' Sasquatch taken at the National Championship air races in Reno, Nevada. IMGP9614 by Miles Shaylor, on Flickr Screamin' Sasquatch by Miles Shaylor, on Flickr Messin' with Sasquatch by Miles Shaylor, on Flickr
The Screamin' Sasquatch is a 1929 Waco. The engine is a radial Pratt & Whitney 985 but between the main gear is a GE CJ610 turbojet engine. (The airplane has both a jet and a reciprocating engine!) It uses both 100 octane avgas and Jet A fuels, and requires controls (and indicators) for both engines.
