Mine came with Big Sur. I will update to Monterey this weekend. I haven't installed Photoshop or Lightroom either. I going to do that after I upgrade. I'm kind of back to work right now. I've been semi retired but covid has hit our shop and only 2 of us were vaccinated and I just haven't had time to do more than the basic start things going stuff. All of my settings and bookmarks etc were saved in iCloud so that all loaded automatically. Most of my 99% of my photo library is on an external drive. Setting up my Lightroom catalog will be a bit time consuming.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into that. I'm still hoping my old Mac is repairable at a reasonable cost.

My 6 year old Mac Mini died kind of on Friday morning. It wouldn't boot up, just kind of hangs with the boot screen. So, I just purchased a new one with the M1 chip and SSD drive. Got to say, it's incredibly fast. I can see all my files when in recovery mode on my old one but I still can't get the old one to boot so it's going to get repaired hopefully or I'll just remove the drive and put in in a enclosure and recover what I need. I have all my photos stored on an external so none of them are affected.

I was planning on getting a new one anyhow but I was waiting for the next model to arrive next year. Well, it didn't quite make it but so far, I happy with the new one. It's a pretty substantial upgrade from the 2014 Intel version. The down side is I'm now forced to but a new film scanner and new color calibration device because Canon has no updated drivers and neither does Datacolor for their Sypder which is why I was holding off on upgrades and still running Mohave.

I think very few of us use our fast lenses wide open on a regular basis. The DOF is just too small and not very practical but it's very nice to have when you need it. One of the big selling points back in the days of film and manual focus was that the bright viewfinder of those fast 50's made it a lot easier to focus. Even cheap SLR kits came with f1.8 or f2 glass. When every lens in your bag is MF, the benefits of fast glass becomes very apparent. Film and developing wasn't cheap so nailing every shot was important. Anything more than one roll a week was out of the budget for me at times and sometimes, color film would sit around for months before I could get it developed.

I decided to go with a Mac based on a lot of the Windows 10 complaints I was reading. I already have an iPad which I travel with and it has been a constant companion for the past 4 years. I chose the Mini mostly based on price. I already have a good LG IPS monitor. The difference between the 2.6 Ghz Mini and the 2.8Ghz 21" non Retina iMac is minimal. I spent an afternoon traveling to Albany and visited the Apple store. They had the 1080p iMac and the 4K side by side and my eyes couldn't really see much difference. My Mini is essentially a Haswell iMac without the monitor. All my photos are on my external drives so I didn't really see much point in going with a fusion drive right now.

I'll also admit that I've kicked this around for quite a while. I'm retired now and my budget is tighter and the $599 special that B&H had on Black Friday/Cyber Monday was also an incentive.

My budget this year has been going towards upgrading and replacing computers rather than any camera or lens purchases. Most recent has been a Mac Mini with a 2.6 Ghz i5, 8GB ram, 1TB Hard drive. While not a high end spec, it's many times faster than the Windows tower it's replacing for now. I've wanted to get my feet wet with a Mac for a while and this was a relatively inexpensive way to do it.

I'm quite impressed with the way this little box performs. It's noticeably faster than my Windows tower running Lightroom, despite the fact that my library is on an external drive. While MacOS is somewhat different, there isn't too much I haven't been able to figure out and adjust to. Some things I like better, others I'm undecided at the moment and I'll have a better opinion after using it for a few months.

What actually sold me was a quick demo on a friends. I went to my G+ albums and started looking through my shots. The difference was instantly noticeable, even to a beat up old coot with trifocals. My wife has a Kindle Fire HD and we have Amazon Prime.

I had surgery yesterday for bone spurs in my right foot. I have been kicking around a tablet for a while and bought a Retina IPad on Wed. Since I'm pretty much stuck in bed or the recliner because I need to keep my foot elevated, I can say at this point that it was money well spent

I've seen a lot of good deals recently and the temptation to feed my LBA has been strong but my Christmas present to myself is a new LG 23inch 1920 x 1080 IPS Monitor. It truly makes a difference. My old monitor was ok but you had to angle it just perfect and not move your head an inch while editing photos or it started to look like crap. I've been considering one for a while and today I saw one in Best Buy for $189, a pretty good price. My next item will be a Spyder to get it calibrated just right.

On the photo side, a Katz Eye focusing screen. The Jinfinance cheapie didn't work so well for me. Also Lumiquest softbox attachment for my flash.

Last Monday was my birthday and yesterday my daughter dropped by with a surprise present she found at the Warrensburg garage sale, a stuffed camera bag that was left at the lost and found at one of the local campgrounds. No camera but 2 JC Penny lenses, a 28/2.8 and a 135/2.8, both K mount and in excellent condition. Also there were 2 Sunpak flashes, 8 Hoya filters, a couple of lens hoods. The lenses take 55mm filters but all the filters in the bag and the hoods are 52mm. Not a bad find for a $5 grab bag. The flashes are older but will be usable off camera.

My latest purchase is the Cotton Carrier, a camera carrying vest. The camera attaches to the vest at chest level via a holder that screws into the tripod mount hole. I hike a lot and really love this rig. The camera is right there, ready to use. It isn't bouncing around hitting me plus I don't have to worry about it hitting rocks, tree branches, etc. I hiked up about 3500 ft in rather rugged terrain, especially near the top where I was scrambling over rock. You really can't carry a camera from the strap in those conditions so it you want to take pictures, it's constantly in and out of the pack. With this rig, the camera is always handy. I think it's going to be an even bigger benefit in winter while skiing or snowshoeing.

My most recent purchases are an M 300/4, which I haven't used much yet other than a few test shots, and a major computer upgrade. While not specificly "camera gear", a good working computer with a good monitor and software are as important in the digital age as anything other accessory.

That Yashica is a real classic! The photographer that shot our wedding in1972 used one of those.

Most recently, I finally broke down and bought a flash. With 2 graduations and a lot if indoor shooting I figured I needed one. Bought the Metz 48. Used it the first time this weekend.
