That Sigma is known for what you wrote. The main cause though is a very strong field curvature, where the edges/corners' "focus plane" are much closer to the photographer than the center.
So lack of sharpness automatically comes when you want infinity focus in the center and also have edges/corners in infinity.
Somwhat similar to the DA 15.

Attractive subject and really, really nice composition/scene.
But looking at the cold weather clothing/shoes I have to wonder if that is an old photo? I know you guys on the other side of the disc have a way of sticking to the ground with your feet up on the floor and the head dangling down into the universe, but shouldn't it be close to summer in down under now? The image seems like a fall picture.

Agreed. The fact that I made the comment should give a hint on what I as viewer think is not best. ;)
Obviously - as any judgement - that is purely a personal opinion.

Shouldn't the surface of any pool of water be strictly horizontal?

Impressive. But I'd definitely vote for the original three bird version, which is really exceptional.

Is that an actual single exposure shot?
Looking awesome. :)

More dangerous predators on the hunt:
Used K-1, DA 35mm limited and Pentax Stereo Adapter.
Use red/cyan glasses to view properly. :)
