They are slow, but when they do something it is very good.

Years people complained about a missing teleconverter. Then it came and it was excellent.
Years people complained about a missing FF camera. Then it came and it was excellent.
Years people complained about a missing long tele zoom. Then DFA 150-450 came and it was excellent.
Years people complained about a missing top level prime. Then DFA*50 came and it was excellent.
Years people complained about a missing set of cheap primes. Then DA 50 and DA 35 came and they were excellent and cheap.
Years people complained about a missing allround zoom better than the da 18-135. Then DA 16-85 came and was excellent.
Years people complained about a missing non-screw-drive kit lens. Then DA 18-50 RE came and it was exactly what was asked for.

I do not believe the issue is increased cost/price for the end product.

Probably the problem is a much more widespread one: capacity limitations and following tradeoff decisions.

If they plan to bring out a new camera at time X they have a fixed amount of R&D capacity to spend overall. As you can see even on forums there are literally thousands of different personal wishes out there, which feature people want with few little consensus items. Out of them they have the capacity to develop 10 while not doing 990.

So the question is not IF a users would want "video" improved. The question is "do you want video improved at the price of dynamic range staying the same and AF not improving a lot?". If you get one thing, you wont get others.

And with Pentax the message has been surprisingly clear: they do not see video as any priority, so anyone placing his private top priority on this makes a poor personal decision to buy a Pentax camera, no less than anyone who values optical viewfinders buying a Sony and waiting for them to offer one tomorrow.

And according to the latest survey here with 1600 people participating, none of the lenses you listed are anywhere near the top 10 most wanted lenses. The most demanded lens had 103 votes.

  • 70-200/4 - 38 votes

  • 24-105/4 - 49 votes

  • 18-35/4 - 15 votes

  • 100-300/4 - 10 votes

The top 20 lenses ended at 53 votes.

Be happy that the 70-200/4 is on the roadmap.

I think it is important to understand how long s lens can stay in the portfolio.
The DFA* 50 has top line coatings, newest AF drive, resolved corner to corner top notch wide open and has the new KAF4 mount.
That lens will sell well for 10+ years.

There are many factors.

I have seen a direct comparison of said FA*85 versus the old Sigma 85 and outside Sigmas always poor color rendition and sometimes
poorly reengineered AF the FA* was obviously optically less good in all possible departments including Bokeh (obviously any judgement is personal and not the "truth").
Add to that extra age, less repair options, often worse cosmetical conditions and inferior screw drive.
With that in mind remember the Sigma was sold 650 EUR brandnew with warranty. In absolutely perfect condition used deduct 25%, so lets say 450 EUR fair value.
Given the inferiority of the FA*85 I'd say give it 80% of that , coming to 360 EUR in top condition, with extra Pentax fandom added to maybe 400 EUR.

The item is priced at 860 USD, which I consider ridiculous - and yes, especially with the prospect of a new lens coming in the next year or so.

Generally if something vastly newer is on the horizon, the old stuff gets less support.

Similar to the old 250-600s. I don't see why a fair market value would be more than 1000 EUR for a FA*250-600 when there is the DFA 150-450, which can be bought new for 1600 EUR.

And that is exactly the logic which has been made a law in the EU. Online retailers have an unfair advantge over b&m stores by not needing demo items so they have to accept 14 days returns without any cost to the consumer and the consumer doesnt have to give any reason for the return.

Zero cost anywhere in the EU.

QuoteQuote:

If you bought a good or a service online or outside of a shop (by telephone, mail order, from a door-to-door salesperson), you also have the right to cancel and return your order within 14 days, for any reason and with no justification.

Guarantees, cancelling and returning your purchases - Your Europe
That is much, much better than the rip off rental fees you quoted.

You just try argue for a broader statement but still you use a single extremely niche cherry picked scenario. Sorry, that is nowhere convincing or relevant.

It can be countered easily by just requiring to shoot astro images with a 85mm F1.4 lens over 30 seconds without startrails and without having to buy or drag along extra tools because you need it while hiking. Sadly Canon is behind the curve here it is completely unbearable. Their camera lineup is lagging. Their lenses are lagging. That is a undisputable fact. Quite easy to create a dozen more scenarios, where Canon (or any other maker) can not compete at all.
That is why all those makers exist: because for different user requirements one is better than the other and none is overall better than the others.

Be happy if you believe you made a good choice. Just don't assume others' judgement is the same. They might smile and think "Oh, boy what a step down the poor guy made by mistake".

I'd buy a compact (see the old glass) DFA 24mm F2.8 any time.
The 50/1.4 or 85/1.4 clunky toys? Not. And this is not just lip service, since as a dual system shooter I could have bought the Sigma variants of those type of lenses long ago, but they just dont cut it for me for more than one quality reason.
People have differing requirements.

I wonder if that is all known to their Japanese Mgmt. To me this topic alone should be on top of the agenda of any interview PF has next time at any show with Japanese staff (not local reps from the Americas, EMEA ...).
It's silly to assume corporations automatically work well. Maybe there is just a single fantastic person in the middle layer ignoring/blocking things because its his personal view. Not unheard of.

Could as well be a mirrorless APSC camera built around the GR concept.

There are lots of possibilities.

New action cam?

Drone?

Compact?

The was a new CEO appointed in troubled times.
I bet his first move was to simply stop all investment projects and then only release them one by one after serious checking.
From what we heard multiple lenses were planned to appear much earlier this year. It all got halted.
You will be lucky if you get the one lens this year. It is at least a lost year for the ones who wait for products (which is at least silly to begin with).

Maybe everybody was ordered to stop working on PK and invent a new mount? Or a new GR? Or Theta?

In the end it is about the one area where nobody on any forum ever had even a minor clue: what drives profitability for camera makers? Only they know. And given the fact that they all together did not perform well in recent years means that even with much better data they are not necessarily doing smart things.

I say 50/50 that no new lenses appear in 2017.

Someone mentioned being serious. If anyone claims to be serious he wont be spending his time in speculation threads. He wont wait for a future product.

Honestly it is only geeks (the majority) and fanboys who wait for any company to sell any product maybe sometime in the future.

If you need a new washing machine for your pro business (think hotel) then you go and buy what is out there. You do not hope Siemens/Bosch is going to produce a better one in two years.
And washing machines are much more serious than consumer photo toys even can get.

These speculation threads are the equivalent of tabloids. It's only that tabloid authors tend to know more about what they write. Including Loch Ness monsters.
And the tabloid articles tend to less concentrate on explaining how the author is a professional expert and knows exactly how all sea monsters on the world feel like.

Now, more popcorn to enjoy the show.

Whoa. So with all your skill and easily available knowledge about non/existing lenses in Pentaxland you bought a $2000 Pentax Camera after you already have a $2000 Canon plus the best standard zoom (for > $1000) on the market?

And all this with $200 income?

al260, you are the most extreme Pentax fan I have ever read.

And then there are dumb people who challenge the attractiveness of the K-1 and Pentax system. You are the living example that the K-1 is fantastic and beats the pants off all the competition. :)

The benchmark is always the latest lens with same specs.
That is the Sony which was introduced at 2,000 EUR. But that was before the recent 10-20% price increases for optical stuff from Japan.
So an intro price of 2,200 EUR (about 2400 USD) would be fairly competitive.
Maybe they go cheap and start at 2,000 EUR.
If they think it's premium, they go higher.

Are you implying that you might feel the benefit of one or two pounds advantage of the weight quality of the lens does have way much more impact on your every day photography fun than changing the resolution quality of the lens from 2456 LP/PH to 2581 LP/PH which you are the only person to ever recognize but all the consumers of your images / your friends and family never?

Heresy! Sicko basement dwelling pixelpeepers: build up a pyre!

And don't start to mention size quality... Comfortably putting a good size quality lens in your jacket pocket versus having to drag around a big extra bag for a poorly designed lens with inferior size quality... Who want's to enjoy photography?

Don't we all want the early 1 pound cellphones back, which clearly had a better audio quality? A pro caller only uses 1 pound cellphones!
