In the old film days, the yellow filter was my walk around filter....made B&W film look the most natural. You would use red filter if you wanted the dark sky. With digital, you are much better off doing it in software. The cheap elements plug-in (Topaz Labs B&W) lets you add yellow, green, red, blue filter effects.
