Yep. Although the favored term amongst the local population seems to be "Winter Texan".

RE: Eastern Phoebe So that's what they are. We winter in Texas Hill Country and this year a small flock seems to have settled within the RV park. Fairly regular visitors to the bird feeder going after the cardinal mix.

Hint: Use the AF button and hold it, then use the Quick Shift focus on the lens. Otherwise when you press the shutter release, at the half-way point the camera will override your manual focus. Almost second nature to users who tend to use the AF button for all focusing.

Thanks - re: exposure - intuition and patience. I was in Program mode and couldn't get wider, so I pumped up ISO a bit to get a stop faster. I saw a larger spray a few minutes earlier and knew it would repeat - just wait for it. I have machine gunned images to find the best one, but it is very rare. I'm a single shot at a time kind of shooter.

I won't call this scene at all common in this location. Lake Superior gales are far more often out of the NE or NW. This one was out of the SE.

The 1911 storm was legendary around here also. Not old enough to personally experience it. :) However, I was here November 10, 1975 attending college. Very hard to forget that night. It was the monster NE gale that took the Edmund Fitzgerald. Even the next morning there were 20 foot waves washing over a break wall - on the west side of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

I'm a diver. Huron has its own underwater preserve of storm created shipwrecks. Haven't found an opportunity to dive it ... maybe one of these days.

Know how to tell the difference between the American biting flies and the Canadian biting flies along the shore of Lake Superior? ... If you look close the Canadian flies have 'CAF" etched on the wings.

Cross post from K-3 forum

Lake Superior is under a Gale Warning today. For those of you who haven't been overwhelmed by Gordon Lightfoot's song, The ore freighter Edmond Fitzgerald sank during a gale on Lake Superior the evening of November 10, 1975. This gale in my experience is not as strong as the one in 1975, but certainly no captain should risk being on the open Lake today.

The family has a small seasonal cottage on Lake Superior on a bay facing southeast (close to the gale's wind direction). Other than blowing the cap off the chimney and dropping a few branches, there was no damage.

K-3 & DA 18-135 WR (advisable for today's shots)

To be honest with myself, I like my 18-135 on my K-3 more than I like my 28-105 on the K-1 - - even though theoretically the 28-105 has better IQ.

As a Yooper, I have to ask - where in the Upper Peninsula was the photo taken? If I had to guess, Lake Michigan off US-2 looking west?

Likely you would see the same CA without the house windows. At the same time, it is a non-optical surface and at an angle to the plane of the lens. As such, it will add some distortion to the image.

I learned my lesson about house window glass a few yeas ago in a big way. I purchased a used DA 55-300 and upon opening the box, mounted the lens and took a 300mm test shot through my office window of a building down the block. The image was so bad that I thought I had a deflective lens. I had a very small panic attack until I stopped to think - I live in a 115 year-old house and my office window is original glass. I had incorrectly assumed that the close distance window defects would blur with the lens focused at infinity. I stepped outside the house and took another shot and saw a comparatively beautiful image. That is an extreme example but I learned my lesson. I reduce my expectations regarding image quality when shooting through any window glass. It isn't always the fault of the lens.

Yep. That's West Texas. Head up to that structure on the right and you could have taken the same picture looking in the same direction.

I don't believe you will be disappointed in this lens at f/8 - f/11 - - and like most zooms, in the middle range of the focal length. As others pointed, it is a great lens in the outdoors when you don't have time to change lens - or you really don't want to expose your sensor to the elements just then.

I deliberately took a subject that was cranked out to the long end, close focused and wide open. In other words zero in on detail with shallow DOF. If AF is going to fail, this is where it will happen.

Here was an early test of my 18-135 mounted on a K-30. I was walking the dog and happened on a Little League baseball game. One shot, hand held, way out beyond the fence in center field, so this image is substantially cropped - almost pixel peep, with a sensor that had only 2/3 the resolution of a K-3.

In my opinion, consistently using the hood is critical for the 18-135. I have better optics for both my K-3 and K-1 (which can also be used on the K-3), but the 18-135 is so versatile and more than 'good enough' - and weather resistant - that it is unmounted from my K-3 only when I have planned a specific subject and have time to deal with gear switches.

agreed. How often do you shoot in the rain?

I will say that it is pretty rare that I don't use a lens hood and typically don't use a protective filter over a front element. There are two exceptions - persistent salt water spray and heavy blowing dust/sand. Either have a possibility of etching or scratching the lens coating.

Reposting an old one from May 2013 using a K-30 at 135mm (plus a crop) from the outfield fence. I sold my K-30 to purchase a used K-3, but kept the lens.

If I may add one other tidbit... Unless you work with RAW images (which pretty much always are meant to be post-processed outside the camera), you are looking at jpeg images. And jpegs are always immediately post-processed - by the camera using one of the algorithms built in by the engineers. I would suggest taking some time to explore the various available settings for a variety of image types. Once you get a feel for what you like and when you like it, you will be happier with your images.

Tough to tell in the supplied shot due to natural light fall off - but what it does say at a minimum is a user can go full-frame at 18mm so long as you are careful about the composition.

At approximately what focal length does vignette become noticeable when this lens is mounted on the K-1 - or are you using the K-1's 3/4 crop function to avoid it?

Maybe we were. Did you almost run me over when I was shooting alongside the road, or did I almost run you over?:lol:
A thumbs up for Harry's On The Loop. It is the greatest little dive bar to pull over for a cold one. Most of the parking area is covered a few layers deep with flattened bottle caps as opposed to gravel. The bouncer is a big yellow lab. Smile and give him a nice pat and he'll let you enter the bar.

We winter near Johnson City and I agree last spring was spectacular all over.

We were recently at the lakeside seasonal cottage.I have so many images collected from that area and the purpose was a work bee to get it open for the summer. All I took was my K-3 mounted with the 181-35.

A pine cone fell to the deck. I picked it up, set back down and thought 'what the heck'. I zoomed to 135mm stepped back and forced the aperture wide. I took one shot with auto focus.

Once more stop would have been better in my opinion, but none the less, this is my new PC desktop background.
