I can't agree more - if the circumstances would have permitted it. The shot was 'of the moment' while attending a social event that only peripherally included bowling. I was 4 lanes away from the action. The ceiling was painted flat black. The only environmental lighting were strategically placed small spot lighting. Area lighting was non-existent. I didn't have any options other than straight-on flash.
Dan- I am currently on my laptop and not connected to my color-calibrated desktop monitors. Honestly, on my laptop, there isn't any significant difference between my posted image and your posted image.
Most of all, you both missed the, perhaps too subtle, joke. There are some great fast action images in this thread. Bowling is also a sport, but other than a rolling ball that still takes seconds to reach the pins, the action is comparatively slow and easy to predict the peak. Not all sports photography needs sophisticated gear! :)
