When I pressed the shutter for the first time to advance the film, I thought the 645 was going to drop out of my hands. The clack of the shutter and then the whirring of the motor drive startled me. I love the fact that I'll be able to capture more detail above 135 film. But for now, I need to improve my technique so that I get more keepers. The weight of the camera may force me to depend on a tripod, but I prefer to shoot handheld whenever I can. I suppose none of that was very "glowing". But I'm glad I bought it, I enjoy learning to use it, and I know I'll improve over time.

Thanks Jonathan. I'm hoping I get more keepers as I grow more accustomed to using the 645. Nice job with your MX. I like the second one best.

@malinku, I like the shot of the hand pump.

Hi, my name is Fred and it's been four months since my last...oops, wrong group. But really, I haven't made a single post to any thread since November. Lots of reading, no posting.

In the meantime, seeing all these medium format images peeked my interest enough to get myself a Pentax 645. I've only shot three rolls so far, learning as I go. I thought these might be worth sharing...

All were lab developed and scanned.

They both look good to me.

I continue to try to get an eye for black and white, trying to imagine the B&W image in the viewfinder. It's hit or miss so far (mostly miss). Here are a few just received from the lab. I used the K2 with T-Max 100.

I used the K 24/2.8 here. It's a bit on the soft side, but I'm ok with that.

And the M50/1.4 for this one.

I finally set aside some time to scan some TMax 100 I had lab-developed in August. The lab had also provided scans, but I didn't care for them. Today I did my own scans. Here are a few I thought worth sharing.

Shot with the K2 and M 50/1.4

This time with the K 24/2.8

Thanks tuco and Phil for the filter info. Now I need to get out and shoot. I'll post some samples when I finally get through the roll. At my pace, that might be September. :(

Tuco, very useful information and fine examples. It seems my approach is all wrong - filter use should be determined more by conditions and desired effect for each frame, rather than just picking a filter and using it for an entire roll. Obvious I suppose. As a learning experience, I'm considering shooting this roll with unfiltered, yellow, orange, and then red filters for each subject so I can see first hand how the images are affected.

Thanks Steve!

Tuco, I appreciate the tips. I hadn't considered the ISO downgrade, or much of anything for that matter, other than knowing I was going to lose some light. I just slapped on the filter and started shooting. It wasn't until I received the developed work that I started to investigate. Not my best moment, but I wanted to shoot and experiment. I have another roll loaded now - still on frame one. I'm trying to decide - no filter or orange.

cheers,
Fred

Leave it to me to comment based on a mis-read! Thanks for setting me straight Steve - and the links. Looks like a bunch of folks spending money to have a good time with profits going to charitable causes - and doing it for 46 years. That's impressive.

Ok, to get us back on track...

A while back I finally decided to try b&w again - first roll since 1979. When I mentioned this in an earlier post, Phil suggested I use an orange filter. Of course, I didn't have one. But I did have a red filter from a used collection I bought. So, I shot almost the entire roll with that red filter. I found it a bit challenging to clearly see the subject, so focus suffered, even more so with my tri-focal vision. Anyway, I only had a few near-keepers. Here is one - goats of course.

wuzet, that first one... my first thought was you were at Sid's house. You know, that crazed, toy-destroying kid from Toy Story.

Nice series!

These are too cool - old car, older camera, and even older building. I like the second shot best.

It has been a bit slow going, but I'm enjoying this (so far). My biggest challenge is cataloging them so I can easily match the negative with the file. I still have many negatives remaining. Unfortunately, there is a large group of 110, which I am currently unable to scan. That's a sub-project I'll save for later.

Jussi, yes, the kitchen transformation is amazing. I think the scene is what drove me to post this in the first place. Agree about the resolution, but I figured I would scan as high as I'm capable because I have the space (I don't download movies or music ), and I'm scanning while I'm reading PF or some other site(I can do limited multi-tasking:D).

I'm hoping to find a few other gems to share.

I'm just begining a negative scanning project for my mother-in-law. She's given me her stack of old negatives dating back to the fifties, all shapes and sizes, 120, 620, 110, 35mm. The image below is one of my first scans. I don't know much about the shot - likely taken by my mother- or father-in-law, camera and lens unknown, the sleeve was dated 1953, it's kodak film, and its 120 format. I was impressed by the detail captured first by the film, then by the scanner.

Scanned @ 3200ppi and resized to meet PF requirements, otherwise, untouched.

@Nesster, I really like the way the subject, the grain, and the black and white complete this shot. Very nice. ( wish I had that Pontiac(?). )

Oh my God. I've been laughing out loud at this for almost a minute, to the point my eyes are watering. And the photo is the exclamation point for it all. Fantasic.

@tuco, thanks loads.
