Nice story Graham (just had a peek at your Flickr :) - great shots there !) You certainly did great with that lens - About Flek 35 I had them both side by side and honestly could not see much of a difference, apart from the convenient switch on the f2.4 version ( for manual aperture) and the speed f2.4 vs. f2.8 , they were performing rather the same. One thing that was distinctive about f2.8 though was the close focusing more, which was something like 17-18cm, where on f2.4 version it was about 19-20cm if I recall.

I wonder what camera you are using because the focusing seems to be spot on in majority of cases - not an easy task for a lens like this!

great results ! and I agree with previous comment on the presentation of your film strips in that way you did - exellent idea ! BTW how do you find that zeiss flektogon 35mm f2.8 ? I have the 2.4 version but for collectors purposes sometime eyeing in the direction of the older one, but the one I had handled once was having pretty rough focusing.. Anyway great shots there which proves the quality of these older German lens ...

nice comparison , the film shot came out very grainy though.. my experience of ISO 100 films are extremely favourable and if properly scanned they can easily retain loads of detail with minimal-to-none grain visible. My guess is that somewhere along the process some errors sneaked in and made your film shots on ISO 100 film this grainy as they were taken on ISO 800+

nice scenes nonetheless :)

Amazing ! It reminds me a fine stipple art... in fact it looks almost like a drawing, especially her face.

I'd call it a bargain if its in great condition! From pictures the lens clearly has a potential so it might really take just few more rolls until you might use it to its fullest. I know how I neglected my A 50 1.2 which also proven to be sharp but so far it is shameful to admit I didn't try it on film. And yeah the bad development really can spoil even a best negative.. for some casual shots I need to stop being lazy and finally develop some of those older rolls. But for some important rolls I really wish I could find a lab where somebody would put an effort and skill into doing their job... Anyway thanks for sharing and looking forward to more of your shots with K50 1.2 !

So you finally decided to get the K 50 1.2 :D - I think I recall you saying once to hold onto your sweet Canon/ Nikon fast primes for the time being, so I assume the lens must have been either cheap ? or irrepressible enough ??
:D

It appears to be a very nice copy - especially girl's shot shows loads of detail for 1.2 (especially for this grainy film!) - congratulation!

It doesn't reduce the brightness in any way. These ASAHI branded finders are amazing. I use one with my Spotmatic F and the only disadvantage is that the view is not laterally correct (meaning it shows viewfinder horizontally mirrored, but vertically correct) so takes little getting used to, but its a minor price to pay for the convenience :)

Nice vintage look to those - especially like the second. Brings some memories from my childhood when visiting distant family... time flies

Well spotted and salvaged from destruction!

Nicely put.. gotta agree with you

Nice selection of biblical names :D Any particular reason for selecting them?
+1 lover of that neat Pakon F135 scanner.. really good scans in just seconds!

Really nice review focused on user experience and backed up with some great shots - well done !! I really like that you got 39 exp out of this roll - pretty impressive, considering that the best I ever got was 38 exp with my Kiev which is having very thin gaps between the frames. I also like the shots, considering they were taken with their budget lens I have to say that what once was budget back in 70-80's , today would carry pretty hefty premium price tag indeed !

Looking at this Praktica , how simple and unrefined it is, yet how reliably can deliver 39 fine exposures , I have to say that today's photography market is really far from what it once was...

BTW I don't think I ever shot this XP2 film - it is C41 isn't it ? How does it compare to say HP5+ ? Or even better - how does it compare to that Kodak BW 400 Neopan film they once had ( not sure if they still have it ).
Also It is hard to tell from the shots linked due to small resolution , but how is grain and other aspects of it ??

And some older shots for the thread, Kodak TMax 400, Pentax ME Super , which died not long after that roll was shot - apparently something electrical related so meter became dead.

Looks cool! the lens alone would tempt me although I got its bigger brother anyway. Post some results soon :D

Yeah I can imagine - I got not once nor twice dusty negatives even from so-called 'pros' :P ... but but that is why I apologise for omitting the 'nevertheless' after that well done in my last post :D

Anyway just to keep the post meaningful - here are two shots , one is from Kodak 400 ( I think TMax) misfired my Olympus 35RC while getting ready to take a shot, I didn't get the shot but I got this one and somehow I like it - probably more than the originally meant-to-be shot I would :D

And second is from a curiosity , an Ilford Surveilance film, used for speed cameras and CCtv :) - I had them bulk loaded , and I have to say the results came impressive :D - here is one shot of my son, soon after I got new-to-me SMC A 50mm f1.2 - the aperture is unknown but the camera was my Z1p .

Although I do own some Zeiss glass ( the trio pan, flek and sonnar ) but I am yet to try and shoot with one of their original cameras. These practicas seems to be so crude compared to pentax cameras. I am not familiar but I hear some are very reliable indeed , especially the accuracy of shutter (metal blades ) after all these years is better than cloth based pentax shutters. One camera I am yet to try for M42 glass and is really tempting me is one of these Chinon memotrons - they seems extremely capable on paper - I am 1/2000 s shutter is something !

Amazing results - I can see the dust problem got to you though :) - well done !!

Thank you for the kind words much appreciated . I also like this one a lot XD

Two more shots xposted from BW thread, portraits of my son and my wife this time with HP5+ from that recent shoot-out with Spotmatic F... very capable camera, and wide open metering is a blessing compared to Spotmatic ;) - only annoyance is the fact that one needs to keep the cap on, otherwise the batteries are drained.

Definitely rock solid camera and with pretty good accuracy of both the meter and shutter. I remember once (back in winter '98 ) I've run out of the batteries and was guesstimating my exposure (tricky winter snowy mountain / forest landscape conditions ) and the photos came back perfectly exposed. That roll of Kodak Gold is still to date among my best rolls ever...

Anyway this Spotmatic F is obviously another league , with ex++ built quality and accuracy both meter and focusing (although I miss the split screen at times). I am very happy with the shots I got with it from this TMax roll - here are two last which I am allowed to share :P

Thank you ! And no - the Zenit camera is my son's who will get his first proper film camera at 5 years old this Summer. The shots were all taken with Spotmatic F.

(BTW. believe or not but the Zenit from photo IS actually working, even light meter is working :) - but I never liked this EM , and much more preferred the 12 XP version which I still have in perfect working condition .)

Funny I didn;t know we had another film BW-only thread going :) - here is x-posted from other places.

Meet Paul, one of the protesters standing outside of the Marie Stopes International clinic in Buckhurst Hill, England. They were praying and demonstrating against the abortions that are performed there every day. A very kind man, genuinely concerned with the deaths of thousands of unborn babies being killed every year in the UK. Later the same day they took part in an anti-abortion '500 crosses for Life' prayer procession which started at Westminster Cathedral and ended outside Westminster Abbey, London

Shot with Olympus 35RC and Ilford FP4 125 Plus
