By the way, the price of the K-1 in Japan is way higher than other countries anyway, and has been from the start. The changes in the exchange rate only make the differences more extreme.

The K-1 is (8% tax inclusive):
- ¥280,000 in the Ricoh store
- ¥250,000 street price, including discounts
- ¥230,000 is the cheapest I've ever seen it, from an online retailer I'd never heard of

So even after these increases in other countries, I think it's still cheaper after tax than it is over here. And it's still a bargain for what it is. Of course, I sympathize with anyone who was saving up, only to see the price rise.

I'm sure these lenses are fantastic and built to high standards, but bear in mind that the lenses you refer to are actually Japanese, in the sense that they were designed and produced in Japan. So, Leica may not be a Japanese company, but they are heavily reliant on Japan for their TL and SL ranges. I think you have to look are the M series to find lenses that are really produced by Leica themselves.

Panasonic designed the 90-280 you mentioned.

All six of the TL lenses are based on designs by Konica Minolta.

I'm pretty sure this comes from Ricoh Japan originally. Last September they conducted a very similar survey in Japan. I posted about in the thread below.
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/304127-rico...ns-survey.html

It makes me think that the items that ended up prioritised on the roadmap shown at CP+ this February may have been directly influenced by the results of that survey in Japan. If you think about it that way, the lens survey serves as a hint as to what Ricoh means by "Large Aperture" on the roadmap, because only f1.4 lenses are referred to like that in the survey, and certain focal lengths are referred to as ultra wide, wide and so on.

So "Wide Angle Single Focus" means either 28mm or 35mm f1.8 (probably not f1.4). "Large Aperture Standard Single Focus" probably means 50mm f1.4. "Large Aperture Medium Telephoto Single Focus" probably means 85mm f1.4. Large Aperture Ultra Wide Single Focus" probably means 24mm f1.4.

The follow-on thought is that if they are repeating the exercise now with an international audience, does that mean they are planning for the next batch of lenses to be designed?

There's a video on the Ricoh website where a photographer on the Ricoh stage says that the K-1 was originally meant to come out in October 2015, then it was delayed to November, then December and finally to the February 2016 announcement with April delivery.

Actually, there is some other interesting insight in what he says. He goes on to talk about how the debacle with the original K-1 using the Philips sensor had effectively shut down any serious discussion of a full frame camera for years until Ricoh came along. He says that even then marketing had not been keen to make it initially, and that the impetus of the project came from the engineers themselves, with them persuading the planning department to let them make it. Another aside is that mirrorless had never really been a serious consideration, despite some chat about it in interviews (in fact with him as the interviewer, as I remember), and that they had always planned to make it a K-mount camera.

The video I'm referring to is the presentation by Kimio Tanaka on this page. It's the first video as you go down, but it's all in Japanese. He talks about the above in the first 10 minutes.

If Ricoh can sell a 36mp K-1 at $1,800, for $1,400 they can certainly make a more modest 24mp camera, like the D610 with the Pentax essentials of SR, WR and so on. Essentially, if the K-1 is the equivalent of the K-3, it would be the equivalent of the K-70.

But why would they do it? I think a very good reason is that they need to build a market for their FF lenses. You can see already that the K-1 has immediately created an expectation that Pentax will replicate the huge lens line-up of Canon and Nikon. If they need to develop all those lenses, they need to get as many people into the system as possible to create a market for them, and they can't do that with just one model, no matter how good it is.

With regard to production capacity, I'm not sure where the information comes from about the number of cameras Ricoh can produce. When Ricoh launches a camera, they say how many they plan to make per month initially, but that does not necessarily mean that it is their maximum capacity and that they can't produce more in response to demand. The fact that the K-1 has been in short supply could be to do with exceptional pent-up demand and supply trouble with the sensor. Anyway, if they really are planning to be a player and production is the problem, they simply have to invest and expand their capacity. It must be part of the plan,

So I think a second FF model is a matter of when and not if. My guess would be the first half of next year, with some more affordable type variable aperture or f4 zooms and f1.8 primes to go with it.

If the Q series really is being phased out, it would put Ricoh in the strange position of having no small mainstream cameras at all. They have Theta, GR and WG, but they are all very specific in their appeal, and certainly not what I'd call versatile.

So in my opinion, one of the following will probably happen.
- A new Q camera will be released after all.
- Ricoh will launch some new compact cameras as alternatives to the Q.
- Ricoh will release a whole new mirrorless system.

Personally, I think that a new advanced zoom compact along the lines of the GR, probably using 1" sensor, is the most likely of the above. It's in line with what other manufacturers are doing, but more importantly in line with Ricoh's own heritage. I don't think they'll push the boundaries with sensor size in small cameras, unless they can somehow make a full frame GR without increasing the size too much.
