I thought it was a fair review, and DPR on the whole seems to giving Pentax/Ricoh more positive coverage recently.
Unfortunately, the comments seem to be taken over by a few defensive Pentax fans. All they’ll achieve is to draw extra attention to the weaker points of the lens and antagonise the reviewers.
I was personally interested to see the comments about AF in video mode. It seems this lens is quite well optimized for CDAF. That makes me wonder about how AF will work on future K-mount bodies.

Exactly. Exaggeration's crude and misleading, so I tend towards understatement. Also, I'm trying to be clear that that ranking is not proof of anything, just a positive indication that online sales are going well.
It's amazing how you can post something that seems overwhelmingly positive and wake up the next morning being called a "naysayer".

Some more samples from Yaotomi Camera. Only a couple are available at full resolution by clicking the smaller thumbnails. ??? ??????????????? ? ?????? HD PENTAX-D FA?50mmF1.4 SDM AW - ????
Most of them are with the DFA 50, but note the captions, because some are with the DFA 15-30 and an Olympus compact.
Actually, it's so hot here at the moment, I've got to give them points for resilience in taking those photos. Pentax gear is rated for -10 degrees to 40 degrees, and we're busting the top end of that scale at the moment.

And they say they are all pre-ordered and going to be shipped to customers this afternoon. They normally keep one to do a review/samples, but this time they've got to send them all out, so the review will have to wait.
If this is what they have allocated to one specialist store in Osaka, I wonder how many they are shipping to the big retailers like Bic and Yodobashi. Anyway, I think it's fair to say they are producing these in the hundreds, if not a few thousand.

It's the "after August" part I'm taking issue with. I think it was a wrong translation of 8月以降 (hachi gatsu ikou) from the start, probably through Google. Since my Japanese comprehension is far from infallible, I checked with my wife, who confirmed that's what it said.
Having said that, "after the beginning of August" could still end up being September for some people.

I just saw that on the other site. I agree that their article is misleading in its title, but I’m just wondering where you got September from.
The item on the Ricoh website gives no date, and the the item on social media said 8月以降, which would mean any time from the beginning of August onwards.
In Japan, they have basically committed to a date of July 20 for availability, so they have to explain and apologise if they aren’t going to meet it, even by ten days or so.

Since this now has a release date, I figured it would be available in Ricoh’s Tokyo showroom, so I stopped by today. It was on a K-1 II, as it was when tried it first time at CP+.
I wouldn’t know how to evaluate image quality in those conditions, so I was mainly taking note of the AF behavior and feel if he lens. It seemed to focus a bit faster than I remembered from CP+. It could have been tuned a bit, of it could just be my memory (plenty of “bokeh” there, too!). You certainly get the feeling that there’s some heavy lifting going on inside. I got a real sense that it was accelerating and then decelerating. It most hits the spot first time, but sometimes needed a final adjustment in the other direction.
In the quieter environment if the showroom, I was more aware of the noise it makes. It’s not noisy, but the sound is there and it is much lower pitched than any Pentax lens I’ve used before. Its less obtrusive and I think it will be basically unnoticeable in the field.
I realized that I don’t have a lot of experience with high end lenses of other makes, so I went to a big camera store and tried some other brands. Basically, I felt that the the Pentax feels most like a Canon lens in use. The closest one I could find to try was a 50mm f1.2 on an EOS 1D. The Pentax on the K-1 II is comfortably faster than that combination. But in general the feel is quite similar to red ring Canon lenses.
The last thought I had was how perfectly balanced the K-1 body and DFA 50 are in terms weight and also the seamless feel of the design and materials. They just feel like they are made to be together. It doesn’t really matter if you need this lens or not. If you have a K-1, you should let it be with this lens. You have no right to stand in the way of it’s happiness.
