CP+ 2019 - New lens roadmap - DA Standard Zoom added - Fish-Eye Zoom removed

With regard to full frame teleconverters, I don’t remember ever seeing one on the roadmap. This discussion was with the roadmap on the projector and discussing the items one by one. Of course, it is possible items to come out that are never on the roadmap, like the recent decorating of the FA35/2.

Did you hear anything about teleconverters from anyone at Ricoh?

In the CP+ on-stage interview between Kimio Tanaka and Ricoh engineers, Tanaka went through the items on the roadmap one by one, trying to get more information.

Having seen the video of the Thursday session, as well as the one I attended myself, I feel confident that I’ve understood what was said, even though it was rather vague and incomplete.

A lot of this was the interviewer throwing out numbers and the product planning guy reacting with with either denials or positively or something unbetween. There’s a lot of scope for misunderstanding, but this is what I understood.

DFA/1.4 - Is at the same stage of development as the DFA 50/1.4 was when shown at CP+. That means launch is still probably a year away. The mock-up at the booth didn’t have glass in it. The lens is being designed to the same standards as the DFA 50mm.

DFA 70-200/4 - Has been delayed for some unspecified reason. The key characteristics of this lens will be that it is small and lightweight.

Wide angle star lens - From positioning in the roadmap, I was under the impression that this would be 35mm, but apparently 24mm is a possibility.

Ultra wide angle lens - They are planning around 20mm for this one.

The longer telezoom - Expect 70-300.

Fisheye zoom - This one has been put aside for now.

DA standard zoom - Looks like a replacement for the DA* 16-50/2.8 is the most likely scenario. From the position in the roadmap, I would assume this is coming first.

Please realize my understanding is not perfect, and this is compounded by the fact that the speakers were being deliberately vague.

Another thing is that Tanaka mentioned Ricoh has developed a hardened version of its Aerobright nano coating that can be applied to many more surfaces of lenses. The current coating is fragile and limited to certain internal surfaces apparently. I don’t think he was supposed to mention this actually, based on the glances.

Finally, one question from the audience was whether the FA Limited lenses would get updated coatings like the FA 35/2. They said that they had certainly considered this, but they are very concerned about maintaining the character of those lenses. I guess this means they tried it with HD coating and didn’t like the results.

My guess is that this is a midrange zoom with PLM focusing. My speculation is that it will be released with the new high end APS-C, which will probably have much more competitive continuous AF and video capabilities.
