I wasn't even thinking of commercializing. I'm looking forward to seeing the article.
Maybe someone on the forums can lend you the lens. Perhaps it is worth posting what you need in the Wanted section of the Buy/Sell forums.

The description says A28, but the lens appears to be an A24 (which would explain the price). You should probably fix either the title/description, or post a correct photo ;)

Yes, it is crazy, but no, it isn't unbelievable. I haven't followed the story in detail and have no interest in doing so. But I'd guess that Ohtani trusted him fully. I don't know how much English he reads so he would likely have been hands off on many of his affairs and at no point did he not have enough money for the things he wanted to do, so there'd be no reason to check the bank balances or transactions. As far as the gambling obsession goes, it can be an addiction like any other, where the rush comes from placing the bet moreso than winning or losing. Just look at all the things you can now bet on online, down to what type of pitch might be thrown next, or what happens at the next at bat. Far different from just betting on the outcome of a game.

Thanks for the insights and the sample images. Your lenses are different from mine, but cover similar ranges so it is good to see how you've approached this situation. ---------- Post added 04-11-24 at 05:47 PM ----------
I'd be interested to read it (and proof-read if you want, since I work as a professional editor).

@UncleVanya if someone wants to donate one to me, I'd be happy to try it out. And if I really wanted to spend money, I could go even wider with the DFA 21. But the goal here is to make use of the cabinet full of lenses to the best of their abilities :)

As mentioned above, if you look at the lens reviews for the A28/2.8 and F28/2.8, the latter gets much higher scores especially on sharpness. I think this has to do with some of the challenges nailing focus with this lens, because of the narrow focus throw. If you go by the F28/2.8 as being more reflective of the capabilities of the optics, even the A version should be excellent.
I would disagree in part. It is a poor technique if you are shooting wide open where your DOF is narrow. But where your aperture gives you enough DOF to have some latitude, it is a good way to make sure the AF isn't picking the wrong spot to focus on. Also, there are ways of doing it where you move in parallel to what you are shooting, rather than rotating, which should ensure the image stays in focus.

I've yet to have a case where one of my oddball questions didn't generate a wide range of responses, and I learned or confirmed something from each of the replies. So don't sell your feedback short. It is appreciated.
Thank you for pulling out this link. I haven't used this lens in a while. It was better than the 18-55 for indoor shooting, but my own view was that is was a f4 minimum lens, as at f2.8 the images were way too soft.
I had not plans to get this lens. I was on the hunt for a K1 or a K3-3. In the end a K1 came up for sale with this lens (and a bunch of other stuff, but nothing that duplicated what I had!). From my limited use of it, it is a great pair with the K1 and feels like a much more capable lens than the 18-55 was on the K5 particularly at the extreme ends of the focal length range. I have not tried it indoors yet, though.
I finally came to the realization that I was depending too much on the green hexagon, and that I needed to slow down a bit to fine tune the focus once the initial confirmation popped up. I've come to the view that the green hexagon is fine when shooting at f11, but only partially useful when shooting a lens wide open.
I suspect I would agree with this and likely have experienced it, but never really thought about it this way.
Very valuable pennies indeed. Thanks. I've grown up shooting center focus and recompose, so at least that part I might be doing right. I do think about hyperfocus from time to time, and also have an app on my phone to help gauge where I should be focusing for a particular lens and f-stop.

Yes, I have those 3 lenses. The A28/2.8 was one of the first lenses I bought after the K5, along with an A70-210/4 and A35-105/3.5. The DFA 28-105 was part of the K1 package I bought, so I've not used it much at all. I bought the Tamron to upgrade from the kit 18-55, and used it heavily for a while when I was shooting events, but much lately.
If I shift up to 35mm, I can throw lots more lenses into the mix from m42 ones up to modern FA ones... ;) I'd rather keep this simple for now

Even for me this may be a weirder or more convoluted posting than most, but since I often get a lot of really good feedback, I figured why not?
A bit of background - I've been shooting with a K5 for about 12 years. For most of that time I primarily had MF lenses, and the only "new/recent" glass I had was the 18-55 lens. It is fine for what it is, but it can be particularly weak at either limit and particularly at 18mm. A few years ago I bought a DA 21 LTD as part of a package on the forums. It was a bit of a whim purchase as it wasn't a lens I had on my radar, and I figured that at some point I'd either get a wide angle zoom or a DA 15 LTD. However, once I got it, I loved it, and it is the only lens that always comes with me.
Now I have a K1, so the old FF lenses I had collected could now in theory be used as designed, including those that would effectively be wide than the 21. Not by much, however, as my widest FF lenses stop at 28mm.
So here are the three questions I have - and I'm interested in answers/comments/suggestions on any of them.
1) For shooting at 28mm, which would you pick? A Pentax A28/2.8, Tamron 28-75/2.8 or DFA 28-105? I realize zooms give me flexibility in focal length, at the expense of having to tote around a larger and heavier lens, and the two zooms are both AF (relates to question 2 below). But it is more about which lens might work the best for a wide angle landscape shot. All three lenses have about the same ratings in the lens review sections.
2) I did not like using the A28/2.8 on the K5. A big reason was likely user error in trying to use the lens for things it isn't good at. But a lot of it also had to do with challenges nailing focus. One thing about this lens is that it has a very narrow focus throw - about 90 degrees from closest focus to infinity. It is one reason why I think the F28/2.8 has much better ratings even though it has the same optical formula. So the question here is what can be done to make it easier to focus a lens like this. I realize focus peaking is an option, and if I'm using a tripod it certainly makes sense. I haven't been a huge fan of live view on the K5, but will probably make more use of it on the K1 because of the articulating screen. But maybe there are other things I'm not taking into account when doing wide angle shots.
3) If I wanted to test all 3 lenses at 28mm and the same aperture, or perhaps trying to find the optimum aperture for each lens and thus trying to maximize the quality specific to each lens, what sort of test scene would you suggest? Something with harsh light? Some fine details? A wide range of colors to test the rendering? This isn't a test I'm likely to do more than once, and while I could take a set of shots with two different views (for example into the sun and backlit as one contrasting set), I'd still like to plan out a basic location where I might learn something from the test.
And for anyone who thinks I'm overthinking this and I should just get out there and shoot lots with each lens, you certainly have a point, but time with the camera is often limited so I figured I'd start here with the collective wisdom of this excellent community.

Both the K1 and K1mkii use USB 2.0. How long does it take you to transfer images if you are doing a large batch or is this something you just live with if you don't transfer much or often?

I've been using Sandisk or Lexar cards (3 in total) with my K5. I took advantage of a recent sale to try a Kingston card for my K1 and only have a few days of experience with it. For the most part, any decent card you buy today will be fast enough for the camera (although if you are shooting video as well you may need to check this). Where I find the speed matters more is in pulling the images off the card. My slower Sandisk/Lexar cards can be painfully slow and they are only 16GB in size.
This article is a little dated, but the basic guidance is useful. In particular it shows the gap between read and write speeds, which for the Sandisk Ultra would start to impact the camera's ability to clear its buffer. I don't often submit to the monthly contests, although I've nominated other entries for many of them. So perhaps this isn't a new issue. But for this month's entries, most are appearing at one rough size if they are in landscape, while those in portrait orientation appear 3-4 times larger. I suspect this is due to how automatic rescaling is applied to the width or largest dimension. And I realize you can see any one image at full size by clicking on it. But this month there are a lot of entries, so the variation in spacing makes the page a lot longer than it needs to be. Also, given the subject matter, the pictures appearing much larger can be a lot more impactful on first viewing. So I don't know if there's an easy fix to standardize the size.

Unfortunately for the Jays, it seems to have come to a grinding halt. Oh well, maybe back to hockey for a little while (if that isn't spouting heresy in this thread) while I wait for the weather to warm up and the early baseball season to evolve.

Well guess what I also bought as part of the K1 package (and why the piggy bank truly was emptied...)
I wasn't planning on putting the full purchase online, but I'm almost there at this point.

I was a film shooter for 15-20 years, and progressively moved into P&S digital when I needed something with instant feedback and/or the cost of film and processing just kept going up. I don't remember when I stopped shooting film altogether, but it has probably been close to 20 years.
I wasn't shooting Pentax then, so no first hand legacy lenses from those days. But after I first bought the K5 I've been buying legacy glass like a lunatic (LBA at its best) and to keep the costs down, almost all of it was old manual focus lenses. So I have no shortage of 50s - including a SMC 50/1.4, M50/1.4 some 55s a couple of Helios 58... One of these days I'm going to use the K1 to test out the three 135s I now have, an Super Takumar (model 1 - 5 elements in 4 groups version), a K135/2.5 and a K135/3.5 as I'm really curious to see how they render differently. I've also got a Tak 200/3.5 with 18 blades that I loved on the K5 and may try. I won't get into the AF collection, which is mostly of the DA variety, but it does add a couple more 50s to the mix F50/1.7 and FA50/1.4 which was part of the package with the K1. And I'm definitely looking forward to using the FA50/2.8 macro with a 50 mm field of view rather than what I was getting on a crop sensor.
One of my next jobs is to figure out which lenses to sell or pass along as there's a few that probably won't see any use (for example, yet another 50 - an A50/2 that was part of a package I bought long ago)... ---------- Post added 03-30-24 at 11:26 PM ----------
That was the first thing I did before any test shots. :)
