So if, for example, you were out on sentry duty in the Aussie bush in the middle of the night on an Army exercise and you came in out of the wet and/or the cold after your stint was up, it wasn't a great idea to jump immediately back into your sleeping bag, without checking first, in case a creeply-crawly had found the warmth of it inviting.
