Just for fun, I shot the same flower with three different lenses wide open, adjusting the distance to keep the framing roughly the same. All hand held.
The difference in perspective is apparent, but I thought the bokeh of each has a charm of its own.

I would say the bokeh is blurrier in the first - that does not necessarily make it better. In the second the bokeh serves the subject rather than distracts from it. We have to remember what the photograph is OF.
Of course, this opinion is entirely subjective ;)

The second (stopped down) one. The background is still smooth, but gives context without being as distracting in my opinion.

#2 and #6 have something special IMHO.
#6 inspires me to bust out my FA77 soon.

Why not just leave it as it is? Its wide open rendering is rather lovely and I suspect you have other 50's if you want stopped down detail.
The Schneider projector lens I've been using all month has no adjustable aperture at all. It's f/2.0 or it's nothing. Rather fun ;)

It is indeed one of the golden projector lenses. Fixed aperture at f/2.0 and adapted for the 645 by The Bokeh Factory in Poland.
Shot with some DA70 Limited bokeh to keep it honest ;)
It is designed for 70mm film, so full frame medium format is well within its capability. The crop sensor of the 645Z is no problem at all.

I did a foolish thing. A guy in the UK was selling an interesting-sounding lens, and I jumped on it.
As the name suggests, the Schneider Cinelux-Ultra 2/125mm is a projector lens for 70mm cinema film. It has been adapted to Pentax 645 mount by The Bokeh Factory (Tom Widlak in Poland). Wide open is the only aperture you get, and it is designed to give light, not receive it.
I'm hoping it will make a nice soft-focus portrait lens. In the meantime, learning its quirks is going to be a fun ride. |
